Macclesfield Museum is currently searching for interesting Joy Division artefacts for a proposed exhibition due to take place in May 2010. The Curator of the exhibition is Jon Savage.

The museum would like to hear from anyone who may be interested in loaning unseen photos, live recordings or footage, flyers, posters or general rare memorabilia.

Joy Division, over their short duration, had several studio sessions which never really saw the light of day until 1997's box set Heart and Soul, and even then, not entirely.

Your humble blogger's previous Joy Division entry contained several tracks from these sessions, but I decided to do a roundup-style post featuring the majority of these - some are already available on the box set, but others aren't, and at that some of these have never been heard before in this quality you're about to find here.

So allow me to present Joy Division: 1979 Miscellaneous Studio, pulling from three separate recording sessions, presented in lossless FLAC for your pleasure.

I'm trying to complete my collection of Live material, and need a little help. Does anyone have the whole Lyceum recording used on H&S. I'm trying to get a CDR copy of that recording for my own private collection and enjoyment. I need some help, and I know someone on this site has to have it. I already have the Soundcheck, "No More Ceremonies", "Komackino", "Further Transmissions", and "H&S", and I would like to add to the rest of the "H&S" recording. "No More Ceremonies is shit by the way. I am willing to pay for the copy with my Paypal, to your email or we can trade boots. How I got here, and questions about the remasters.

So the other day I was renting movies with a friend at Blockbuster. They had a new oddly named section -- "Special Interests". A lot of political/musical stuff. I saw a Joy Division documentary and, vaguely remembering the name from a song or two I'd heard on Pandora, decided to rent it. I watched the first 30 minutes or so, hated the whole talking heads thing, and headed to the computer to look for the band's music.

First thing I noticed is that there are a lot of "collections" of their work, mostly because of so many vinyl singles and live recordings. But they do have two "proper" albums, so I decide to look for those. I find what appear to be decent rips (although by now I realize that if I like the music I'll end up buying it, since they're only decent and not perfect) and put them on my DAP.

I start listening to Unknown Pleasures, which turns out to be a vinyl rip. I don't really like it, and I stop halfway through the first song. I try again with Closer, still don't like it, but force myself to listen for a bit. I stop about halfway through. Later on I finish the last half and decide I want to buy the music. What to buy, what to buy...

After researching for a bit, I find there are at least 3 CD versions of the two albums: the first ones, the ones from the Heart and Soul box set, and the 2007 ones. Unfortunately, this post is exactly what I was hoping I wouldn't hear about H&S, since that seemed like a relatively cheap way to get a lot of goodies (especially everything from Substance) in one purchase. I can't find any commentary along those lines for the 2007 remasters (I mean in more or less "technical" terms -- anything but "They sound awesome" or "Everything's so clear" would suffice).

So: Are the 2007 remasters any good, i.e., not just louder than before?
