Does anyone know why 1578 was the number chosen for the pressing of this limited edition?

Wasn't there some kind of historical significance?

Yes, I heard it was a reference to some battle that happened in Rouen but I can't find any more specific mention of this anywhere and was hoping that someone here knew...

I used to know, but have forgotten! I think it relates to the religious/trade wars of the 16th century in France involving power struggles between Catholics and the rising Huguenot (Protestant) anti-Catholics. One of the focuses of this social spiritual and economical struggle, was the town of Rouen, because of its importance as a centre of commerce. I think it was a lot more complex than that though, with a lot of foreign interference from Holland and Spain. As usual, the French lower classes were the ones that suffered. I may have got it wrong, but if I have, I'm sure some bugger will put me right!

I always assumed it was down to standard deviation and they tried to press 1500?

I also noticed something interesting on the SS website.....

If you go to the shop, it has copies of the vinyl...for sale...???

It lists them for 1000 euros ($1500) each. So does that mean those are 'left over' copies from the initial numbered press run? I highly doubt that, but a repressing? So assuming those are not from the initial press run would a repress from the original manufacturer fetch such a price? I personally don't think so.

I just emailed them to inquire about it. I am guessing from the price these have to be original copies..... Any thoughts?

Maybe they have a few left over from 1979? I guess you would hold onto some. 1000 euros/£798 is quite steep anyway, for that price I bet a few people would part with their copies.

The Durutti Column and Throbbing Gristle ones are also the same price, they've got to be kidding with those ones!

Yes, I received the same response after my inquiry. He didn't mention how many copies they have in stock either. Definitely more than what I would want to spend on it, at the moment I am fine with a $20 reissue off ebay.

With all the talk about the rarity of this record I find it odd that the record company would still have any copies at all. Interesting though. What was the website where they were trying to track all the numbered copies of the record? I guess no one had copy #263.

Also, I wonder, if it's a left over, is it mint/new or maybe an employee trying to cash in ..... it's late my heads a mess and I love Mexican Beer !!

clearly Jean-Pierre has one or more left and for £798 would part with one. As for employees, I suspect SS has only one 'employee' and that's JP himself.

Think the religious violence was at a bit of a lull, the only thing I found referencing it was here.

(I've added #263 to the listing.  The highest one I've ever seen 'in the wild' has been #1493)

[true at the time of this posting; a fellow JDC'er says he has #1512]

An old school friend of mine owns two copies (and a signed Ideal 7''!). When I next see him I'll endeavour to find what their numbers are for you.

I remember ordering x3 copies direct from from JPT as soon as Peel played it, even though he was emphatic about the x1 per person, In for a penny...was the thought!
Anyway I received the x3 copies with a nice letter from JPT (Long story but I believe this went to Neil Woodvine in the end).

It would be an original they have for sale.

Not the first time that number 938's been up for sale, last time it went for "only" $1500.  I'd guess the original buyer reneged on his purchase after the sticker shock, maybe because the postage wasn't free, heh.

#1340 added to the list.

I vote that if it's possible with the webboard software that Marko nails up this thread, and we can use it for the continued trainspotting of SS33002.

I believe someone is selling Sordide Sentimental on ebay right now for 13.99 but I am pretty sure it is a fake. At least that's the impression I got from reading about it on http://www.joydivi.org and seeing how to tell the difference.
