I always keep tabs on the Sordide Sentimental single. I bought mine in probably 1994 or so in Los Angeles in the days before eBay from a small collectors record shop. I saw it advertised for sale along with the original Ideal For Living 7" and made the trip up to the north side of the city to check it out. I really wanted Ideal For Living since the sleeve was probably folded by one of the band members, but I inspected it and checked it out. It really is not such a pretty item! The owner played it for me to check the condition and I thought it sounded awful. Now that I've read more about it, I think they originally sounded terrible! In any case, I passed on it and got SS (#756) instead. It is in pretty good shape- has the inserts and the vinyl looks and sounds perfect. The trifold is somewhat wrikled because the vellum glued in pocket seemed to have shrunken at a faster rate than the cover. Minor bend mark as well. I keep it at work in a locked cabinet because the temperature control is better there! I think I'm at the point where prices have driven me to consider selling- I bought it for $125 which I thought was a grand price at the time; now, the prices are unbelievable. I think Joy Division has a much greater following with the documentaries and compilations that have been coming out over the last 20 years, so I guess this is logical. Now I regret not picking up the Ideal For Living 7" at the time, but I don't think I could have afforded both.

Sam - 903 is up again, not the same ebay user that had it up for sale last time though. Weird or not?

Isolated: thanks for the note, it wasn't listed as sold originally, so maybe this is the same guy using a new seller ID, or it's exchanged hands privately since the original listing.  I've updated the site with the new info.

update: 903 is up there yet *again* but with a limited-edition poster (40/50) being sold for the princely ransom of $10,000 USD.

Yours is a "second edition" (medusa head), which I'm stating here for clarity's sake, as it's made very clear in the auction listing itself.

No it was in either La Crescenta or Flintridge or maybe as far as Montrose on Foothill. Poo-Bah was a favorite haunt of mine for many years though- they moved and the soul is gone. Very sad. I'd like to hear your story of course!

Ah, I may know the store you're referring to.  Foothill Records

Anyway.  Sherman, set the WABAC for March, 1980 ...

I had left college (Caltech in Pasadena, thus my several-times-a-week pilgrimages to Poo-Bah) but was not yet on the career path so I was, to put it mildly, completely skint

I lived just down the road a ways so it was easy for me to go there several times a week even when I had no money, just to see what was new.  One of those times when I went in, I saw this shiny 2x7" single with incredibly interesting packaging ... "A Factory Sample".  It looked cool so I bought it!  (Still have it to this day, now signed by Hooky.)

Anyway, to make a long story short, right inside the front door they used to have a long wooden box along the wall for new 7" single arrivals.

One skint, penniless day I went in and spied this much larger object that didn't fit too well in that box - it was our dear friend SS 33002.

I can still remember the price tag to this day - US $4.58!!!

But of course I went in when I had no money, so I did what every clever boy does in that situation - I tried to hide it in the very back of the bin

Needless to say, you can probably guess the rest.  Went back in a day or two later to fetch it, and ...

If you can believe it, I made the same mistake with the "Ideal For Living" 12" ... (or maybe it was the picture disc ... )

To this day, I've passed on the original and paying 'collector's prices' (I remember when I could've easily gotten a 'real' one for anywhere between US $75-$150).  The Internet has sort of paved over the collectibility aspect since the 2 tracks are so easily obtainable.  Still think it's the greatest 7" single ever released, mind you!

I did learn a lesson though - a year or so later when the Tuxedomoon Sordide Sentimental came out, I - well, I should say my ex, actually - grabbed it.  Of course it's not JD but it doesn't exactly go for cheap these days either ...

Doesn't that listing smell funny?  "Oh, just happened to have the record itself, but missing all the other bits" - uh huh.

Then there's this amusing listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/JOY-DIVISION-LICHT-BLINDHEIT-Sordide-Sentimental-7-/140440842642

I sent the seller a message saying the Medusas were a boot and he responded with this load of tosh:

"No it is [a] Sordide pressing. I have many proves [B][sic] But

no interest to explain. I got in my personal

collection the complete output of Sordide

Sentimental, including several 1st pressing

copies of the Joy Division 7" - even the black label issue has

variation with light differences.

Sordide put out more 2 -3 times the legal number

and then start to distribute what you call [a] 'bootleg'

They didn't have allowance to release more.[/I]"

Uh huh

i don't know this bloke personally, but he's got a good reputation for selling vinyl ,grading it for it's condition with a reasonable price, here in GERMamANY. he's the sort of seller, knowing what he's selling & what the downfall is,offering 'iffy item's' (especially on e-bay)!shouldn't it be easy identifying a bootleg ,with the pictures given?

700Euros! Without the sleeve! Has he lost the plot?

It's worth perhaps 30-50Euros at best.

Hi only just found Joy Division Central....Just to update you with my copy, I purchased within a few days of release from 'Small Wonder Records' London E17, England, paid around £2.99 for it. All complete near mint, played a couple of times when purchased...my copy is 562 ..  I cannot remember me getting a bag with it, I'm sure I did not.

Ps keep up the good work!
