Well, after years of driving virtually past it on my way to Congleton, I took a right turn today and had a look at the property - just for old times sake. Kinda eerie, but exhilarating at the same time.

visiting Macclesfield is very high on my list of places I would love to visit. I wonder who lives at 77 Barton Street now.

I don't know if I would like to see that house or not, much less live in it! There must have been so much agony inside it.

I think I would move in and play non stop happy music for 2 weeks just to clear the air.

It was a murder, can't remember the year. If memory serves me correctly it was brought up on the old version of this forum rather than NOOL. The policeman who was called to the murder scene recalled that he knew the address from its more famous previous death.

I looked again on the New Order site. I couldn't find anything.

Jumofi, How about you do a cut and paste or a direct link?

I think the murder story sounds like an urban legend.

Here is what I did find on google. It's mildly interesting, but nothing to do with another death.

I've never heard this story so I'm pretty sure it's never come up on one of the joydiv.com forums.

Sounds like the myth about Ian Curtis being alive and well and living in Portugal to me ...

There was a policeman, think his name may have been Brian Hughes or something like that - recalled that he had been on duty when there was a call in the station that there was a murder at 77 Barton St - he said it was spooky that he recognised the address from a few years before. I will try and locate where the anecdote was put - it was around the time that the house went back on the market.

Yes, there was definitely a post on here. How far do the archives go back? I've just noticed that the house went up for sale in 2002!! I thought it only happened last year!!! Where does the time go??

I knew an ex-copper in the Manchester called Brian Hughes. He'd be about 65 now. I'll try and find him.

Jesus, this thread I started has certainlyu taken on a life of it's own.

I take it the article posted about Barton Street being up for sale was from some years ago. Not may houses in Macc for £65,000 these days.

Would be interested to read more about the history of the property on here............

I remember the story, it was on NOOL, but since the redesign of the site I either can't find it or it's not there any more.

I seem to recall it was submitted by a young policeman who got called to attend a "suspicious death" or something at the address. I'll ask the same question over there and see if the webmaster can lay his hands on the article.

so this is why it was on sale in 98, but why up for sale again in 2002? perhaps the buyers 'felt a presence' (or two)

The story at last! There is something still wrong with it though. If it had been a murder or even a suspicious death the papers would have been all over it, especially the Sun.
There would have been a headline like, Atrocity exhibition at 77 Barton Street.....Or even, Love will tear us apart, if it had been a crime of Passion.

The only word we have, is from this policeman who is maybe glory seeking. I would like to see a story from a newspaper.
I'll try and find something, but I haven't got much time today.

That's not to say the house isn't haunted by something. The same something that got to Ian. Evil spirits are very real and
they are attracted to people who are very frightened and/or very depressed. That's why it's so important to try and keep positive no matter what.
