Anybody seen this photo before and can date/place it?
(it's from here:  http://ian-curtiswishlist.tumblr.com/post/98082555696)

[tumblr_nc9p45538D1s04264o1_500]

My best guess is sometime in October/November 1979.  Not sure who the guy on the right is...

They're so very young. I guess 1977/78. Because look how undrugged Ian's eyes appear. Plus his face has not filled out as it did 1980ish.
The guy on the right is Stephen Morris? It's the severe haircut I think what throws off one's perception.
I could be wrong.
But I could be right lol.

Pat, don't think so.  That's what I thought at first, but Ian's shirt doesn't match, and Steve's haircut is way too severe.  Didn't even think it was him first because of the haircut.

Note that Bernard's Shergold Masquerader, which made its first appearance on "What's On", when did he pick it up? His shirt/trolley combo appears quite a bit, so don't think seeing him dressed this way can be used in and of itself to date photos.

Could be mid-1979...

I'm inclined to think it may have been from the Basement in Cologne, January 1980. Have to check other pics from that evening though. But there aren't many pics of Ian wearing a black shirt, so that's a match to begin with.

TJ_Davidson:  it's not, Ian's shirt is different, and Bernard's wearing jeans during that show.  Suspect it's not around the time of other photos we have, so could be early 1979, or when the last time was SM got a haircut.

Happy One - Barney's Masquerador is in the 'Band on the Wall' pics from Sept 78 ... so presuming he bought it mid '78 ??

Are there any pics of Steve from the Oct '79 Electric Ballroom gig  ... ref the short hair  ...at the same time as Barney ?? The pics ive seen mainly feature Ian and Hooky, plus Barney and Ian, etc

Only other time I can think of when Steve and Barney both had such short hair was the Lancaster Gate tube station pics .... that I think were done around the time of the 'Genetic' demo's? If so, that would be first week of March '79 .... which would tie in with the Hope and Anchor or Marquee gigs ??

I thought the tube station pics were from Nov '79?

According to a feature in the "Music Week" magazine 25/8/07 issue: "November 1979 - Anton Corbijn attends JD's concert at the Rainbow Theatre, London and makes contact with the band. The following day he photographs them for the first time."

Well, Hooky appears to be naked, so if we limit our search to gigs where he appeared in the nip...

It can't be early 79 as unless my eyesight's failing me (more than possible!), Barney's Masquerader didn't have the tremolo arm at Bowdon Vale but it does have it in that picture. I also don't think it's from exactly the same time as the tube station photos as Ian's haircut was shorter in those pictures.

If I was to have a guess, I'd say backstage at Plan K October 79...

Slightly off topic and no help whatsoever but there are a few photos here I have not seen before:

Back on topic, October 79 seems most likely to me. I always thought that they all had their hair cut short right before the Corbijn photos but if you look closely it's really only Curtis that looks like he's recently had a trim.

Fair point Erik .... for some reason I have always associated those tube station pics with the Genetic demo's ??!! [smile]

PhilC - Thats a fair shout (Plan K Oct '79) .... Barney has the same gear on, was just trying to find a pic from that gig of Steve .... to no avail thus far.

However, in my search I did find that NintendoSegaSonyGuy has put 35 mins of the Plan K '79 audio up on YouTube as of last month (as aired in Macclesfield a few years back). Quality is poor as expected ... but despite the audio conditions, it sounds like one fuck of a gig! Brilliant vocals for 'New Dawn Fades' and 'Transmission' ...

Criminal that the video footage from this gig has never been released via any medium after all these years

Always wondered whether someone had recorded the audio from the screening. Pity that the audio alone is nothing to write home about.

Curse those bloody builders! [mad]

I think we can all agree it is finally time for that Plan K video to be released. In terms of putting up the audio, that's all we got. Remember, the venue's power went out, cutting the showing of the tape short. Nevertheless, a brave soul recorded the video's audio from the audience. If you look past the terrible quality, the performance is quite cracking. The setlist alone is perfect. Fuck anybody who chastises me for putting it up - it's bad quality and it's not like I put the actual video up, though at this point, if I did have the actual video, it'd be very difficult to not release it. It's driving everyone mad.

Anyway, that is a lovely picture, thehappyone. The dude on the right is definitely Stephen. They all look pretty young in that pic, but I'd still estimate it closer to late 1979, October-November range. Bernard's hair and outfit match that of the Apollo Theater gigs.

Isn't it easier to narrow down to how many times/which venues Ian wore all black? I've not seen but very few photos where he's wearing that combo-usually the shirt was one color, the pants black (or brown I'm presuming for the b/w photos.).
Then again, I've not seen every photo ever, so.... lol :-)

*The Apollo
*Les Bains Douche (was just posted here somewhere, thanks dmxi!)
*those famous "Ian Curtis smiles!" but I didn't want to publish them rehearsal room (?) photos by Kevin Cummins

I have a saved photo properly labeled (for a change lol) that says "Manchester 79" where the buttons on the shirts match, so that would be The Apollo, yes? (my ref bks are packed up.)
But I'm going with Les Bains Douche (dec 79) because Steve had the severe haircut then- because wasn't that where everyone but Peter got sheared by Rob Gretton?

If Rob paid for the new clothing, did he keep such notes like "Ian-black shirt w light buttons" ?

Okay now I've confused myself. I quit lol :-D

I wouldn't narrow it down to the gigs wear Ian wore a black shirt...after all it's somewhat likely that he would have changed his shirt after coming offstage (e.g. YMCA and Paris backstage photos...).

But it's definitely not Bains-Douches as Steve's haircut is wrong as can be seen from the photos of the band walking round Paris...and Barney's hair had grown out a bit by the time of the Paris gig too.

I'd say the picture was taken around the same time as this one: http://www.enkiri.com/joy/pics/jd_paris79_wall1.html . And I definitely don't agree that it's from Paris '79.
I rather suspect early November, going by other pictures of Ian & Bernard from that time (Electric Ballroom & Rainbow Theatre).

Nope. Nope nope.
I got it now.
*Possible: The Apollo, Oct 1979
*I bet a nickel on Les Bains Douche Dec 1979
*Not Likely: whichever part of November 1979 the famous "tube" photo was taken

Because-I'm watching the Grant Gee "Joy Division" and just prior to the 51:28 mark you can not only get a clear look at Ian's haircut (which is *styled* for The Apollo as well as for Les Bains Douche) but also at Steve's severe cut at Les Bains Douche (but no footage of Steve at The Apollo) and, in the color still photo for Les Bains Douche both Ian's and Steve's are the closest match to the photo in question.

Check it out and see what you think :-)

So, has this been nailed then? Do we think it's Plan K 79?. The white walls certainly make it look like it could be.

The pictures from the Apollo gig that were taken front-and-center show Barney with a very similarly-short haircut.  So I'm guessing from roughly that same timeframe.
