Anyone know for sure where this photo was taken? It was Corbijn's first meeting and photo session with the band. I've seen Lancaster Gate tube mentioned before but also seem to recall at the time it was published Finsbury Park station being mentioned. My memory is not what it was.....and it is nearly 30 years ago now!

Wish I knew! It was Lancaster Gate according to Anton, but I think Peter Hook and Steve Morris said it was Queen's Gate? Does anyone know the exact date of the tube station photo shoot? According to a Music Week mag feature from '07: "November 1979 - Anton Corbijn attends Joy Division's concert at the Rainbow Theatre, London and makes contact with the band. The following day he photographs them for the first time." I guess this means the photo shoot must have taken place on the 10th or 11th.

No such tube station in London as "Queen's Gate". Could be "Queen's Park" - although it does look like Finsbury Park to me.

May have been Queensway (the next station along from Lancaster Gate)?

Finsbury Park for me too. I tried to take the same picture with some mates in 2002

Given the Music Mag diary quote that Erik has posted, Finsbury Park would make sense as thats where the Rainbow Theatre was located (its now a church I think?)

Thanks. Yes the Rainbow is now a church. Shame as it was a really good venue.

Looks like the greenwich foot tunnel under the Thames to me.

Anton Corbijn says it was Lancaster Gate in this article in the Observer about Control...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2007/sep/16/popandrock.joydivision

'Within 40 days of arriving in England,' Corbijn remembers, 'I had tracked down Joy Division's manager, Rob, and I met them at Lancaster Gate tube station. They were staying at a hotel nearby. That's where we did the first photographs. Being a well brought up, good young Dutchman, I wanted to shake their hands, but nobody would shake my hand. After we had done the photographs, they shook my hand. We didn't say much. I couldn't say much. Not only was my English really poor but I had trouble with accents. I could just about make out good English. The Manchester accent didn't make it easy. Also, I was in awe of them. It didn't make for much conversation.'

And this picture taken at Lancaster Gate bears more than a passing resemblance to Corbijn's

However it's all been done up now (along with much of the London Underground) so there's not much chance of being able to recreate it!

In Rob Gretton's notes in 1 Top Class Manager it says 'Anton Corbijn (Photo/Pass) - Sat' which would relate to 10 so the picture was maybe the 11th?

I was at Lancaster Gate tube station yesterday and I took this photo

I'm pretty certain it's the location of the photo as Lancaster Gate is a small station with only one set of stairs leading down to the platforms from the lifts. It's been refurbished extensively since 1979 so looks very different!

I realised afterwards that I should have taken the photo in black and white of course.

Nice shot! It could well be the one. Tough to to tell for sure though now as it's so many years on - so much of the Tube has been rebuilt.....and not before time
