Stephen Morris's book arrived in the post today. I've only skim read it so far but it's great to finally get the true story about the 'Short Circuit' LP. Steve confirms that they only played three songs on 2nd October 1977 (as this site's gig guide suggests), only two of which were recorded (the other being 'Novelty'). It's a shame to find out that there isn't much more locked away in the archives but at least we know for definite!

Thanks for this info. I’ve always wondered about this, I thought there’d have been a few more songs and wasn’t it generally thought to have all been recorded but for some reason never released beyond AALD. At least we have the ace Factory live Novelty anyway

The Electric Circus Novelty is very fast and rough (and incomplete).

Hadn't realised that novelty was available. Is the third song Warsaw, then?

Yes. A screen grab from Stephen's book:

Truth, have you somehow managed to hear the version of 'Novelty' from this gig?

Novelty is on the Middlesborough recording from 2 weeks previous - fairly easy to find but hard to listen to, shouty vocals and hard rock guitars. Or fast and rough as Truth says.

Are you referring to the 14th September gig? Info I got with that concert says the last 5 tracks are rehearsal. I don't have the recordings on hand so I can't listen. Are you sure? Of course my info might be wrong. But JDC also lists novelty as being unheard . Unless it needs to be updated. Ian is said to have shouted about Hess when from the screen grab shows that it's Bernard who shouts it. (So that def needs updating!) Edit 2: You must be talking about the third novelty - that I don't have on my copy!!! I've just compared the track listings of THE LEADERS OF MEN (CD) and REACTION (my version). Edit 3: I've just found that I have The Leaders of men (duh! really need to clean up my drives!!) And so I was able to listen to the three versions of novelty on there. The first is complete (as are the other two) and is probably part of the 14th september gig. The 2 others sound nothing like the first (but are similar to each other save in length.) They also don't sound like concert songs, but more like the rehearsals they are touted to be. Therefore are we talking about the right recordings?

Yes, the version of Novelty I meant was live in Middlesborough 14/9 which was 2 weeks before Electric Circus so probably didn't change much. It's track 4 followed by Ian saying the next song is At a Later Date - 8 songs in total. Not heard the rehearsal versions.

So we haven't in fact heard the version of novelty from the Electric Circus?

When the cassette was being sold by Omega, they did let those who asked hear some snippets. You had to promise never to circulate it though.
