Would anyone be kind enough to make a copy of the soundboard recording from 14th March 1979 for me, I'll pay any cost etc..

I mixed this gig through our (Foreign Press) PA and have always wondered what it sounds like

Sincere thanks to the chaps who kindly sent me the links, very mich appreciated.

It was so ethereal to hear the band through headphones again for the first time since that afternoon.

The one thing Ian did more often than not was to annoy any front of house engineer with Ian's persistent demand for 'MORE FOLDBACK'. We'd push his monitor to the limit but he'd never be satisfied, on one occasion I told him to take his head out of his arse and he might be able to hear clearer - sacrilegious talk for some of you guy's I'd imagine. The trouble with meeting his demand was that it can destort things a little once an audience fills a room, all sorts of noise bounces back.

Allowances are made during a soundcheck to componsate for a room later filled with bodies, and my adjustments can be heard during the first track as I battle to get my levels spot on, it didn't help much when Ian let out that roar, rattles the heck out of a set of ears surrounded by headphones I can tell you, nerves on his part, speaking of which, the other issue with Ian and his nerves occurs at the start of a gig, you can hear him clearly forcing the mic against his mouth, again causing feedback issues, but I knew he relaxed this habit as the gig progressed.

All in all I'm very happy with the overall sound from this gig, bearing in mind we're only hearing what'd been mic'd up, but in this instance, as was our way, we'd mic'd the entire kit, which I think for the size of Bowdon Vale was about right, so Stephens excellent playing can be heard in it's entirety. Of course Hooky and Bernard would via for volume, but I feel the whole band benefited.

A word about the PA, it included a pair of bloody huge ALTEC bins, which can be seen in one of Martin's photo's, complete with Tweeters balanced way up on top. The desk itself was a 12 track unit with built in cassette deck - hence this lovely copy for all to hear - altough as Rob took the tape he'd supplied from the cassette straight after each gig I am wondering if this is one of those occasions where we added an extra cassette deck, as we did at the Royal Standard, Bradford (I can remember doing that, and on at least on one other occasion - a factory gig maybe)

I hope this helps paint an image of that night

Cheers
Colin

Really enjoyed this post . A great insight into the intricacies of the everyday sound checks and sound battles that every band has.
Really interesting hearing about Ian's preferences and gig habits too.
Many thanks and if anyone else has any stories or encounters that they had with the band then I for one would love to hear them also.
