I recently met a bloke who claims he saw JD supporting Suicide at The Factory in 1979...of course, we all know the gig took place - though the true date remains hazy - but my eyebrows were raised when the geezer let slip his age. 47, the same as myself, which means he would have been a tender 13 years at the time of the concert. Was The Russell really quite so liberal? And, my word, he was a tiny little chap too, not a cat in hell's of passing for 18. Anyone else heard similar hogwash? Though naturally there's very little that can top the gentleman who once informed me he saw The Sex Pistols in Cardiff, December 1976, and that Sid Vicious was 'totally awesome'. He must have been. The gig never took place and Sid didn't join for another two months. What do you say to these people?

I usually tell em that although I was only 4 years old I saw the Velvet Underground live at Warhol's Factory and that Nico looked really gorgeous...

I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that a 13 year old could have attended...I was only just 15 when I first started going to punk gigs and you were far more likely to see kids of that age that age in the audience than people in their forties. Just take a look at the audience members in the pictures from Bowdon Vale.

I remember attneding my first "real" gig, in a club and all, at 14, with a mate who was also 14, and that was in '86 - people used to grow up faster back then. And I was a fan of JD at 13 already.

I saw Joy Division support Buzzcocks at the Rainbow in 1979. I went with my elder brother and I was born in 1966.

Bowdon Vale was a youth club though - or did you know that and were being hilarious? Hard to tell!

Sort of! But at the same time you did frequently see people well under 18 at punk gigs in those days but rarely did you see over 30s!

You're right - I attended my first pub gig in 1986 at 15, snuck in with my elder sister. My neighbours were punks and they used to tell me about gigs they'd been to when I was 9 or 10. They can't have been much more than 13-14. It was different back then

The photograph is my partner's. She attended both the Bristol gigs that JD played. A few years ago we found her old fanzine (which they never got around to selling or making copies of!!!) and sent it to this site.

For years the pic was the only one online of the Colston Hall gig,  which was frustrating. I remembered she had another - but the last time I had seen it was in '98 and we'd been through two house moves since.

She retrieved a pile of old pics the other day - and there was the second pic - I'd forgot he had the Phantom round his neck!

And that is no bullshit!

The JD /Suicide gig would have been 78.This is from Record Mirror July 29th of that year. The gig was on the 28th according to Hookys book..So your bullshitter would have been 12.
