cologne-basement review by m.kloft-translation by d.lamon

january 1980 in a small club in cologne, germany, played a band that hardly no one knew:joy division.4 months later ian curtis was dead & the group suddenly became pop-legends.michael kloft reminisces an unforgettable concert & departure.

anyone who wants to rent the room today has to part with 275 euros.
the club with the name 'basement' has a solemn atmosphere, true to colognes nature.here wolfgang niedecken found his guitarist klaus heuser & his drummer tommy engel(german rockgroup known as BAP,w.niedecken claims to have given ian a room for a night;the translator).the 'crypt-to-rock-on' ,under the evangelical christ church, already had a
footnote in local musical history - were it not for the night where it advanced to the post-punk olympe.it was the 15th of january,a tuesday night,a near unknown band played in this 'vault' that, half a year later, became legends due to the suicide of their frontman.

hindsight: I.C.,singer of the english band J.D.,is 23 in the ending 70's & torn apart.the band has reached some fame in britain,70 concerts in the last year (79) & released one album & one single.in
1980 they take on the european market, beginning with a tour through the netherlands, belgium & then germany.
on the 10th of january, in bartonstreet-macclesfield,the bags are packed & ready to go in the livingroom.I.C. hates to travel in the band-bus as he can't stretch his legs.only flying is worse.he doesn't confess to his wife deborah that he's taking annik, his belgian girlfriend, with him.three days prior the band recorded a couple of new tracks & all are sure:"l.w.t.u.a." will be the new single.

                             INSECURITY,IRRITATION,SEARCH

the first gig of the tour,11th of january in amsterdam,is a big let-down.though I.C.'s idol, jim morrison rocked the paradiso with the doors, the venue is nothingless than a rundown old church.they're all  happy to get the gig behind them.1500 fans per show in london & manchester but the following days in den haag, nijmegen & antwerpen, they hardly reach a couple of hundred fans...& the worst is:quite a lot of hippies.

peter bömmels (p.b.) impatiently awaits the new decade since he knows that J.D. is coming to town.the 28 year old painter has just moved in to his new atelier in cologne.in the backyards of the 'mühlheimer freiheit nr110',hans-peter adamski, jiri dokoupil & p.b.
are dreaming of a career like once the 'expressionists' of the 'brücke'(bridge,a german art-collective) & the 'blauen reiter'(blue rider,kandinsky,painter).p.b. is fascinated by J.D.'s first album 'U.P.',the most promising LP of the last years.
songs like 's.l.c.','disorder' & 'i remember nothing' are precise emotional pictures of his own insecurity, irritation & search...the fear
of annihilation, paranoia, cold steel, empty window rows, neon, childhood memories, the loss of friends, alienation at home & stone cold anger.
the musicians are on 'edge' due to their long ride through belgium & their stay in a cheap hotel.the bus driver had problems finding the small street in cologne.I.C. is still annoyed about the poor sound of the last concerts & now again:a church as venue.
on stage of the 'basement' the equipment & four musicians hardly find space & the old vault only has capacity for 250 fans.the initiative 'alternative rock in cologne' uses the youth-center(cellar) under the christchurch with the agreement of the town-council for concerts.

                                  SERIOUS MESSAGE

the tickets are pink with a small star:tuesday,15.01,8 o'clock,J.D.,6.50 DM.there's a small GB in the bow of the J.,a few weeks prior there was an english punkband playing in the 'herwarthstrasse',but 'the charge' didn't leave a memorable impression.
the small room under the church was flooded with bright lights, which gave it a sacral feeling.a fan base of 150 young people await the concert to begin." the band is better live than on vinyl" the 'knowlegable' like p.b. rumour,"genial dilettantes with soul, not like the ambitious art-students a la david byrne of talking heads, just plain musicians with a serious message."
a shy synthesizer sound from bernard albrecht(sumner) opens the song 'atmosphere',the drummer stephen morris & bassist peter hook give the typical beat of J.D..behind the mic I.C. appears like a schoolboy, his eyes signal his insecurity, his vulnerability:"walk in silence.........."

                                     IN ECSTASY

just as the last "..don't walk away" simmers through the 'crypt',the
intro of the next song rips-up the atmosphere, like a thunderbolt &
nothing is like it was before."when routine bites hard & ambitions are low",ian sings the first verse of the song that will make him infamous after his passing:"l.w.t.u.a.",a hymn of the despair of an
ending love.in that moment p.b. wonders about the musician on stage who is singing this with all the love he can bring up.the intensity of that moment bears no example, indescribable.an 18year old (m.kloft himself) from bonn captures this moment for eternity.
one song is building on the other,driving...,more perfect:"these days","insight","she's lost control".the punks pogoing, visible like shadowplay on the walls of the'crypt'."the audience was dancing externally as they were internally",p.b. remembers a few months later for his first article of the 'spex'."I.C.,struggling,summoning,arms flailing, screaming & then whispering, embodying the soul of the group,he was their burning-point."he believes to recognize an indiscernable climax in the concert,"the soft melancholy tones coloured themselves into stubborn, rebellious tones."in 45 minutes the band drives the audience into ecstasy:the mighty 'day of the lords' shakes the 'crypt' to it's foundations.'shadowplay','interzone','disorder'.it's great existential music & not plain anger or superficial banality.I.C. catches the tension of the room, sometimes with a calm voice or he screams when necessary:"where will it end......"
"the music is no celebration of doom, beautifull decadence or coquetry with death & self-destruction",p.b. writes.he ,also was disturbed by the nazi drummer-boy sketch on the first single of the band, the name J.D. refers to a brothel in the second world war.all
that is harmless, the artists believe.a play with forbidden symbols & the lust to provoke.

                                   BREAKDOWN

already in school ian liked drawing soldiers,he's interested in style & history of the third reich, but his true fascination lies in human sufferings, his wife remembers later:"the whole culminated in an un-
healthy obsession for physical & psychological pain."since the doctors diagnosed epilepsy, the singer is even more restless than before.having a seizure in front of an audience is embarrassing to ian,but still the fear doesn't keep him from giving all he has on stage.
the concert in cologne is on it's boiling-point as J.D. play their single that was released in october '79.I.C. sings with an even deeper voice than before:"radio, live transmission...",suddenly the singer breaks down.the crowd reacts clueless, believes it's part of the show.
as the medics rush to the stage & hurl the twisting body outside, they realize how precarious the situation really is.a short time later curtis returns, desperate to carry on.the band plays 'atrocity exhibition' but then the show suddenly stops.

J.D. carry on to play concerts in the netherlands & one in the berlin
'kantkino'.end of january the band returns to manchester.on the day before their tour to america,I.C. commits suicide.on the 18th of may,his wife finds his corps in the kitchen.the band reforms in the same year as new order.p.b. co-founds the music-magazin 'spex' in the same year & makes a career as an artist & art-professor.

last but not least, that i didn't breach any copyright laws.if so,i'll be away for a while!

i am awaiting clearance from m.kloft(very busy individual, check link above) for the edited version so we have an appropriate
first-hand concert review for the concert segment.i also asked him if he has some 'extra'
memories to share which haven't been known or written elsewhere,so...thumbs crossed.

What an absolutely spunking piece of work. Thank you, dmxi...a friend in Germany sent me a smudgy photocopy of the ticket back in 1983 along with some European JD press which later turned up in 'A History In Cuttings'; in return I gave him a cassette of the Western Works demos. This is a real moment for me as The Basement gig is my favourite JD performance. Muchas gracias.
