Have any of you ever think that the Yorkshire Ripper was a Joy Division fan and was following the band to see them live?

I know how this sounds [crazy]

A fantastic theory. I know Steve or Hooky were questioned by police and Hooky even looked like him.

I think the recent JD in Yorkshire piece mentioned a date where only one person attended so it's quite possible.

Never...The Yorkshire Ripper was committing assaults in the area before Joy Division was even a thing.

Eh?

Most were between 1976-80 so fits the time frame. There was a murder in Manchester the weekend of the Electric Circus gigs, 1st/2nd Oct'77.

He met his wife in the Royal Standard.

I've read a few books about the case, he did kill two people in Manchester (Oct '77 & May '78) but I think we can safely say he wasn't a fan. In his statements he just describes driving to Manchester and heading straight for the red light area (Moss Side / Hulme)

But how do we know he wasn't a fan? He was good friends with Jimmy Saville in Broadmoor.

Just had this really weird dream where there was a discussion on here as to whether Peter Sutcliffe was a Joy Division fan.

The assaults on women started in 1969 His first murder was in October 1975. It really doesn't matter when most of the murders happened, he was already acting on murderous tendencies before Joy Division were around. I chalk this up to coincidence.
I mean if the theory is he was a fan, yeah he could have been one, but he also could have been a fan of sweets and kittens.
If the theory is he was a fan and decided to follow JD around and kill women at each concert, the evidence doesn't support that...At least in any obvious way.

I believe he was more like a fan of the Carpenters because he had a thing with hammers.
