Watching this Buzzcocks' gig at the Electric Circus in 1977, at the end of the song "What Do I Get?"  there seems to be Ian among the crowd.
Just look on the central-right side the tall and pale guy at minute 10'37'' of this video and tell me what you think:

Can you recognize him?

According to his biographies, he was attending the punk gigs at the Electric Circus in 1977 with Debbie or Iain Gray, so I thought that was him.

What do you think?

I'd say no but the bone structure of the face is remarkably similar.

Ace video by the way.  Never seen this before and I love Magazine.  Devoto has got a bowie/eno/roxy music thing going on there.  Love it!

It's not easy to point the person I mean. It's the tallest one, with a pale face and a with the same hair-cut Ian had.

If I look at that video still, then I somehow do believe that there's a 15-16 year old Mick Hucknall and the person behind the guy with the light blue shirt, that indeed might be Ian. Sure. Why not? There's the Manchester link, the Electric Circus/punk/Buzzcocks link, the haircut link even.

Yep.  It's Hucknall.  Massive Magazine fan back in the day, apparently...

Hucknall is the red-haired guy in the first row.

I wasn't meaning him, but the one among the crowd (not in the first rows) on the central-right side, dressed with something that seems a black sweather.

Watching that again to me it really seems Ian and I recognise his same expression of pleasure (kind of smile, but not a full smile).

What I'm wondering is, how did Mick Hucknall go and see, and love, all these
wonderful, wonderful bands, and then be inspired to form Simply Red? You can
see from the footage that he is in absolute awe of Devoto and Magazine, so how
did Simply Red happen? Pause it at 17:22, the guy is having a a moment of sudden
and great revelation or realization, then he formed Simply Red?

Well he was in Frantic Elevators before he was in Simply Red, and they were a lot more in the Buzzcocks/Magazine vein

Saw a thread with the title: "Is that Ian?".
Expecting nothing evil, I clicked with my mouse and started reading. And then there was Mick Hucknall...
I have to listen to "New Dawn Fades" at least a hundred times to cope with this.

Again. Please, read what I've written and don't stop at the face of Mick Hucknall.

To see Ian you have to wait til the end of the Buzzcocks' "What Do I Get?" and, at minute 10'37'', you'll find him among the crowd (not in the front row as Hucknall).
Push Pause many times to individuate his face, 'cause the footage is quick and not well defined.

I see the person you mean, there is a resemblance but his face is in semi shadow so impossible to really say for sure.
