I once heard someone say that they wondered if the song "From Safety to Where...?" was ever performed live. Well, I found this video footage of a soundcheck to one of JD's concerts, and Peter is playing the bassline to the song. It's about the closest I've ever seen.

What concert is this? Does there exist a full version of the soundcheck audio, the song live, or the video footage?

There are no live recordings of 'From Safety To Where". The footage is from the Manchester Apollo (Oct 27 & 28 1979) which were recorded by Richard Boon. A few songs from each night were released on the official "Here Are The Young Men" video. A few songs that are not on the official video have popped up over the years: Wilderness and Colony (plus minus box-set bonus).

Even thou there are no live recordings of "From Safety to Where", it stands to reasons they played it live at least once or twice. Hooky himself said they played all the new songs a few times live. So they probably played it live and then sadly dropped it.

Check this link to learn more about the Apollo footage.

Aw...well, it's sad that no live recording exists (or has been discovered in someone's possession), but I'm holding out hope that the full Apollo Theater live footage will be released some time. Or put on bootleg. Whichever one of the two.

Not nice at all. I hate that version. Everything that was special about Joy Division is absent in this version. No room, no emptyness, nothing. They have turned Joy Divison into tasteless mainstream power-chord rock rubbish. I can not stand to listen to this for more than 50 seconds. If something remarkable happened after the first 50 seconds, sorry, I've missed it.

Great, thanks for flagging that up. I think they have done the song justice live and Hooky is clearly taking it seriously - excellent!

Aye, nice rendition by Hooky. In the absence of a JD live version, it more than does the job for me.

It's a strange one, as not every Joy Division gig is in circulation, maybe they played it once. Wonder why they chose to play Autosugesstion form the ep on a regular basis, but not 'From safety to where'. Hooky also is soundchecking the riff at the start of the last night at the Moonlight club on April 4th 1980.

We have been told that 'Something must break' was played live, which we are yet to hear, so maybe 'From safety to where was also'??

I'm sure they played every song, at least once or twice. If I remember correctly, Hooky or Bernard or someone said that somewhere.

they prob did, but dropped it as its quite a weak song jd wise and they couldnt take it anywhere to that extra level in their live set...

Unless a tape turns up with it on it, we will never know, as everyones memory is either shite, or they are not wanting to tell the truth!
