While organizing songs on my laptop to listen to them in chronological order, I discovered that "Glass" on Substance is slightly edited: The Factory Still CD (FACD 40 as well as the Warner Bros. W2 26495 CD) contains a faint bit of bass strumming at the very start, which got chopped off, reducing the running time from 3:59 to 3:53. Even the 2007 Still re-release is shortened to 3:55.

Anyone else notice that? It's a small change, but it does strip away one of Hannett's masterful, moody touches.

Yeah, depending on the release, some songs have a few extra seconds, here and there. The Italian misprint of Still is famous for having Ian's words "I still can't hear myself" at the very end of "Exercise One." The Japanese box set version of Still has a bum bass note at the start of "Walked in Line," which I believe was edited for the 2007 remaster.

Some editions have different fades, too. The 2007 remaster of Closer has "The Eternal" fade out the end, whereas all the other editions I have heard do not.

It's the longer versions that sound very interesting -- those stray few seconds of insights into how the band functioned in the studio.

Has the Italian "Exercise One" been digitized and posted online at all? I've never heard that. There are conflicting reports about how much extra material is on that pressing. Is that it, or is there more?

The version of "Walked In Line" on the original Factory Still CD runs 2:48. Is the Japanese box version longer, then?

Glad to know others are interested in these variations! They make collecting fun (and challenging, at times!).

No. The Italian Still is still just word of mouth. There are apparently plenty of mistakes on it. One of the more notable ones is the fact that "Glass" is replaced with "Digital" and some of the songs are out of order.

The Japanese box set version of "Walked in Line" is also 2:48. Perhaps it's just the 2007 remaster that omits the extra note at the beginning.

Wallflower : Your comment about the Italian 'Still' mis-press "still being word of mouth" in incorrect.

Ive got a copy, and supplied some of detail in the discography section on this site in terms of how to identify a first issue of this - which contains different rough mixes / edits from the master tapes of tracks that were later "tidied up" for all other releases (including the UK one)

ItalyBase RecordsInitial quantities are mispressed using the wrong master.
Studio version of 'Digital' is included as are several different versions of standard issue tracks. EG. -at the end of 'Exercise One' Ian can be heard talking to the control room. Other tracks were issued on 'Heart & Soul' box set later. Black labels with white text. Gatefold sleeve with top opening.
Address on the rear sleeve is shown as 'Base Records Via Castiglione'. However, this address does not guarantee a mispress. The mispress has the matrix number FACT 40 1/FACT 40 2. On copies with corrected tracks it's FACT 1/FACT 2.

maybe john digitized it  on to his own computer for personal consumption  to spare/save/preserve the vinyl?i bet if you search the net thoroughly you will find the desired snippets but 'leaking' official material is not wished by the moderators of this site due to current law concerning copyright which can create a lot of unnecessary problems.

I don't think anybody's asking for the song to be posted online, just Ian's comment. [smile]

The Martin Hannett's Personal Mixes and In the Studio with Martin Hannett CDs seemed to promise so much in the way of variations, but some of it was simply unlistenable, and possibly not even Joy Division. The mixes of "From Safety to Where" and "Autosuggestion" were interesting in that the drums don't have that dub reggae echo effect heard on the final versions. The montage of studio chatter is also fun, with Rob laughing that he can't break a cup to produce a sound effect, and the lift recordings are entertaining, but the metronome tracks seem fake (can anyone confirm Martin used a metronome?), while some of the full songs seem to be recorded from vinyl.

What kills me is that "In the Studio with Martin Hannett" had a small section of an amazingly variant version of "Insight" that differed far more than Julia's outtake version she found on an old Hannett tape (anyone remember that story?), but it cuts out after just a few lines. It's bullshit.

Wallflower,
"In the Studio with Martin Hannett" is also very much denoised. Awful. It spoiled the sound.
