I have thought this before but the latest post has prompted me to say that I don't think there is nearly enough written about RG on this site given his massive contribution to the JD story. I thought his notebooks were a fascinating read.
I still can't believe he was only 46 when he died ..considering he looked at least 46 in 1978!

Totally agree. Gretton shaped and defined the attitude of the band, which was just as important as the music itself. If we all think back to why each of us fell head over heels for the band, yes it was the music, but it was also because they were just different to all the other bands. They never played the same set twice, they didn't play the usual venues, they never put singles on albums, they only did TV appearances if they could play live, they didn't pander to corporates, I could go on... A lot of that eff you attitude came from Gretton. And yes, his "1 Top Class Manager" book is the single most interesting book about the band you'll come across. (Shame the same can't be said about certain autobiographies...)

IMO Its a crime that Rob effectively took so many thoughts/memories etc of his first hand experiences with both the band and the formation of Factory to the grave with him .... especially given he effectively was a silent fifth member of JD (in terms of input / direction / etc). I appreciate that he was typically a private man ...who didn't want to 'play the game' ... but I often wonder what gems he could have shared - ideally with a trusted journo who was there at the time (ie. a Jon Savage etc) - if he could have been persuaded to part with his thoughts in greater depth and detail ..... Shame we'll never know

Many of Rob's ideals are still with Hooky today.
