mmh, google 'JD harmonicas' is a good start.....btw got l.reades/m.middles 'torn apart' in which 'hewitt is credited & he's done a couple of things to help the JD legacy but he's also known for some shady sales & releases which didn't go down to well with the 'community'.i can't & won't judge him personally as i don't know him...it's just a response to sales that are very doubtful, imo.

Lot's of questionable stuff from Hewitt - not just on JD where he has calmed down a bit since Hooky knows him and the lawyers had a word

But check out his activities on the Captain Beefheart front and you'll see he's doing nothing more than pressing up albums from old bootleg cassettes but passing them off as official with unproveable back-stories "oh John Peel gave me these tapes" etc

He released the unreleased Bat Chain Puller album as "Dust Sucker" on Ozit - it was from a bad quality tape that he claimed a deceased Liverpool DJ had given him, and that the DJ had been given it by Beefheart himself. Like that gave him any right to release it?

Then when the Zappa estate (who actually own the recordings) finally released the real thing last year, suddenly Ozit mysteriously released a vastly improved  "Son Of Dust Sucker" edition. Audio forensics showed that it was a cloned CD from the Zappa Estate release. How the guy hasn't been crushed by Gail Zappa is anyone's guess

As well as the shady activities detailed above, he also seems to have suffered from the "I really was a music mogul / svengali figure in my younger days, honest guvnor - and without me all these bands would be nobody's" condition in later life. Based upon some of his expansive verbage concerning the Leigh Valley Festival, you could be forgiven for thinking half of England actually attended this event, and that sizewise was more on par with Woodstock - when in reality about 200 people attended. Likewise for the Deeply Vale Festival. Likewise for a band called Tractor (who??). He did partner with Hooky back in the mid 80's regarding Suite16 (formerly Cargo Studio) in Rochdale. Think very carefully before parting with any cash to an Ebay seller called Beam265

It's amazing that MH seems to have had 2 of everything. He must have known they would have been worth something one day.

The way it works is that they know exactly what gear Hannett had/used with Joy Division.

1. Scour ebay for people selling matching vintage gear for the going rate

2.Buy said matching vintage gear

3.Sell said matching vintage gear on ebay at a ludicrous price, using the unverifiable claim that it’s the original one that “Hannett had in storage”

Easy money really – I did catch him at it a few times in the past, but since then ebay started masking the user names of bidders, so you can’t see the smoking gun any more

Let the buyer beware – I’d say anything Hewitt sells is highly unlikely to be the original piece of gear.

Let’s not forget that Hannett was a junkie for some considerable time. Junkies don’t tend to hoard expensive items for after they’re dead…

I actually got this Hannett book and DVD for Xmas.

My hopes were not high given Hewitt's past record.

First lets gets the problems out of the way :-

The sound production on the DVD is terrible (ironic given the subject matter). The sound level goes up and down like a fiddlers elbow! Some of the edits / transitions from one piece of film to the next are pretty bad. Some of the video footage is poor quality.

The Book is pretty much a transcript of the DVD interviews - so badly needs editing. With no real editing you get the same stories over and over again. Also there is an interview with one of Hannett's childhood friends who he used to go to Bus depots with. Quite why Hewitt felt the need to include the level of detail about Vintage buses is beyond me. Literally several pages discussing the specifications of vintage buses !!

....BUT and it is a big BUT if you are vaguely interested in Hannett you need either the book or DVD. I learned a lot from the book and DVD - the scope of the interviews is truly impressive. Also the recording sessions of Joy Division are dealt with in considerable detail. The kind of detail that has been largely forgotten by both Barney and Hooky in their recent books. For example - in depth interviews with the Burnley AMS guys on how Hannett used their digital equipment to shape JDs sound. Interviews with the likes Chris Nagle discussing such things as the type of amps and monitor speakers used. Also fascinating detail on the equipment used for the JD live sound etc etc.

Until perhaps the definitive JD memoir (perhaps from Steve) is written you will get something out of either Hewitt's book or DVD. I am in no way connected to Hewitt (as I hope my initial criticisms of the the Book / DVD shows).

Tons of Hannett "stuff" now on ebay courtesy of the Ozit carousel.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Pro-Audio-Equipment-/180014/m.html?_ipg=50&_sop=12&_ssn=beam265

For a heroin addict, Hannett sure kept hold of a lot of his old equipment..
