Seeing as we are still trying to determine the location of the 'baseball boots' photo, another mystery that still needs solving is the location of the photo's that Harry Goodwin took of JD.

Here is one of the pics im referring to :

I posted a thread on this almost a decade ago (yikes!), and still we are none the wiser ....

Harry was the Top of the Pops in house photographer between 1963 and 1973 ... taking pics of the Beatles, Stones, etc ... so its always been quite intruiging that he snapped JD (given they werent big pop stars , on Top of the Pops etc)

I always thought the photo's looked post gig  - mainly due to barney looking quite pissed  .... and look circa Feb - May 80

Harry died last year aged 89

Anyone any suggestions / confirmations ?

The only date I've come across for the Goodwin promo shots is "April 1980". In the pic you linked to above I think Ian looks a bit similar to the May '80 photo of him with Natalie in TFAD. But really, I have no idea.

Pat, thanks for bringing this up. I have been similarly "troubled" for the same amount of time!

Firstly, I don't personally think this is a post gig shot. IC looks far too fresh given his physical exertions on stage. Is it possible that this was a shoot arranged in advance of a potential TOTP appearance or at least showing of the video. Am I right in thinking that although primarily chart based TOTP would occasionally showcase an upcoming release? Maybe by late April some copies of LWTUA had already been distributed and the BBC were sufficiently impressed to give this some air time?

Reading this back this theory sounds complete crap but it's worth a punt. I take it PH makes no reference to this in his book? Can't recall anything in the Gretton book either.

There are three photos from the same session in the booklet that comes with the New Order Retro box set - one each of Barney, Hooky and Steve with very big smiles...presumably there's a fourth one of Ian somewhere?

For what it's worth, I'd agree with Keith that this was a specially arranged photo shoot and not taken post-gig...not sure about the Top of the Pops theory but I don't have a better one!

I really can't imagine Joy Division being lined up for a TOTP performance. They appeared on the John Peel show and I was amazed once when they were played on Radio One during the day! but TOTP always played it safe - novelty records, the No 1 hit, caberet acts etc. They never played anything remotely cutting edge or punky. Very occasionally they might play a big punk single but only over the credits at the end of the programme and Joy Division never made a big enough dent in the charts to even warrant this.

There must've been another reason for the BBC photographer to take these photos and I think it was their appearance on "Something Else"

compare the clothes in the video to the photos in the post above and, apart from Barney's fetching jumper, they're the same

Toby, that's a great shout. I had considered the SE appearance also ( only last night I was scouring the net for "Harry Goodwin Sep 79") but with no results. I had previously ruled it out on the basis of the standard JD period checker - the haircuts- but I don't know why as there is very little difference if any at all.

If this turns out to be true I think everyone will have been thrown off he scent by the April 1980 lead. This seems to be standard when being unable to identify a date for a JD event - see IC interview for Radio Blackburn and IALP rehearsals at TJD.

Yeah, agreed, it's obvious that it was a BBC related photoshoot. If Bernard takes off his jumper you've got a good match with the shirts.

Probably taken whilst waiting around at the BBC Oxford Road Studios.
