Anyone in England see this morning's edition? A nice but brief '60 Seconds' interview with the Captain on page 22. I daren't upload a scan as I'm unsure of copyright issues, and there wasn't much new anyway - but he is, for once, quite complimentary about Bernard. Though I'm afraid there was no need to have another poke at Gillian: "...no replacement for Ian Curtis. Ian was in another realm". Was she ever meant to replace Ian? I think not. A trifle unfair on the lass. Anybody disagree?

And what was that bit about him not being allowed in "the vault"?

I didn't understand that remark either. The most intriguing comment was that he's sitting on "a pile of about 150 cassettes, all with nothing written on them, from rehearsals..."

I saw it on the bus yesterday. I was going to scan it and post it here, but I think my dad threw it away by accident. The comment about the tapes interested me. Do you think he's telling the truth about the volume of them, or is it an exaggeration for the press?

I'd hazard a bit of both...we've known since the early 1980s both Hooky and Stephen Morris have massive collections of rehearsals, and unheard live recordings too. 150 cassettes does sound an awful lot, but then he may well be including New Order tapes as well, in which case it's a very conservative estimate. I don't believe the JD/NO archives will ever surface in full; for all their faults and girly eye-scratching the band are ultra-protective of their legacy and only seem to want the best to be heard. We can't really blame them for that. But all the same, I'd still like to see official releases of the Western Works demos and, hoping well against hope, some of Rob Gretton's personal tapes too - Bradford Royal Standard, Bolton Institute, New Order's debut gig at Manchester Beach Club....they all exist, and a whole lot more besides....

I cannot help but think that Hooky by saying "about 150 cassettes, all with nothing written on them, from rehearsals..." and simple mention of "the vault" is aimed at the very people reading this thread now who will take instant notice and be in a state of excitement at what just 'might' still be out there.  Hooky is well aware of the interest in Joy Division and part of me thinks those comments might just be his humour igniting some of our devotees touch paper.

I would love there to be some further releases of long dreamed of concerts, rehearsals and anything at all we can devour and appreciate however, as 350123 states, I will not be holding my breath as to any further official releases.

Hi,

never underestimate Hooky... He was always the guy who took care of audio archives...
And during the recent years a lot of stuff surfaced that may have been (or not) linked with some dubs from his collection.

See You
