He's back....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-One-Off-Joy-Division-Love-Will-Tear-us-Apart-Signed-by-Ian-Curtis-W-COA-/281027534235?pt=UK_Music_Music_Memorabilia_LE&hash=item416e8bdd9b

"Firstly I have contacted several record dealers to extinguish the idea that this record was released after his death. Below the description are several snippets clearly explaining that the record was released before Ian Curtis' death however the song did not chart. The Rolling Stone & NME confirm this also. I would like to point out 'Love Will tear us Apart' was also re-released after his death and it charted at number 13."

Shame that snippets or no snippets, the record wasn't released until after Ian's death...

Does anyone have items autographed by other musicians who are no longer with us?
The only one I have is Vaughan Toulouse of Department S.

My mum used to collect signed photographs of film stars and musicians in the forties and fifties - several are gone now but she gave me a pic of Les Paul and Mary Ford signed by the pair of them. Does that count?

Does Jon Pertwee count as a musician as he recorded a version of "I Know an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly"? I've got his autograph on an old Doctor Who VHS cover...

Apparently, the seller is in doubt too....

"Misinformed by the Nme, Rolling Stone and many other publications, and you send me a link from 'cerysmatic factory'

I'm not catagorically saying you are wrong I am looking into it, but I'd be surprised the Rolling Stone magazine would publish an incorrect date

- staggerlees"

Even though, the item is still listed for the astronomical price of £6,995.00, and starting bid of £2,250.00.

By the way, i sent him 2 links, to confirm the release date: joydiv.org and Cerysmatic...Don´t know why he omitted joydiv.org in his answer...

I watched this auction end and couldn't believe that these people were being duped like this. I read the description

"found this whilst looking through my signed records recently..."  HOW MANY SIGNED RECORDS DOES HE HAVE? QUITE A FEW LOOKING THROUGH HIS PREVIOUS ITEMS, THE CLASH (2), THE PISTOLS et al.

"didn't even know I had it...." BUT GIVES CHAPTER AND VERSE THAT HIS GIRLFRIEND HAD IT SIGNED OUTSIDE MAIDA VALE STUDIOS DURING THE PEEL SESSION. THIS MUST HAVE BEEN THE SECOND SESSION AS TRANSMISSION WAS ONLY RELEASED ONE MONTH PRIOR. IAN DIES 6 MONTHS LATER AND HE'S FORGOTTEN HE.... SORRY HIS GIRLFRIEND.... HAD IT.

"Ian popped out for a fag....." WHY DID HE NEED TO POP OUT? THERE WASN'T A SMOKING BAN IN 1979 & IAN WASN'T THE ONLY SMOKER IN THE BAND.

So many inconsistencies and an autograph written in lower case. Debbie Curtis describes Ian's suicide note as being "written in Ian's sprawling capitals." Anything I've seen written by Ian was in capitals.

This poor bugger has just wasted £411

Why would Tony sign a book that he owned?

I love that one of his items is a guitar signed by Bob Dylan on 18/6/11, which has a description stating it was signed on Saturday 19th June, with a picture stating the festival took place on Sunday 19th June.

"My girlfriend had this signed for her at BBC Maida Vale studios where Joy Division were recording a "Peel Session"  She insisted we go down there to see if we could get an autograph from Ian"

How would his girlfriend have known that Joy Division were recording a Peel Session on that day?

"Ian came out to have a fag and a chat to the kids that were waiting outside."

Why would Ian go outside for a fag in the cold when you could smoke inside? Also, would kids really have been hanging around outside?

This looks very very dodgy.

I can find out if Ian may have seen 'Love Will tear us apart' 7" before he died, even though it wasn't released, but I doubt it.

The 'Transmission' one looks like a total fake, the Curtis is not free flowing, it's jolted.

Doubt if he would have seen the finished 7" but he had seen the artwork. There's that passage in TFAD where he was enthusiastically talking about it with Debbie - at a time when normally he "couldn't be bothered" to talk to her.

Also, the 'Transmission' looks to me like one of the later repressings, probably post-1980 anyway.
Some of the later reprinted sleeves have a slightly degraded print quality/colour as well as no texture
and this looks like one of those.
On the earlier subject of signatures by people no longer with us, here's a few in my collection:
Billy Fury
Trevor Howard
Dick Emery
Joe Strummer
Stuart Adamson
Malcolm Owen, Paul Fox
Matthew Ashman

The Transmission 7" seller is also selling this signed Smiths LP which is clearly fake, look at the wobbly signatures, no way are they real.

Also, as pointed out, that issue of Transmission is a re-press, probably late 1980 or 1981. The autograph also looks a little like it was written slowly and slightly wobbly, a dead giveaway for fakes.

Someone wasted £411.

I find it quite reassuring that even in these difficult and austere times, there are fools simply
begging to prove that they unquestionably have more money than sense.

So the item is a defo fakes then eh guys? Fairly new to the JD signed Ian Curtis items (would love to own one though!) Any tell tale signs for a potential buyer to purchase a genuine one? Did Ian sign many items before his death? Guessing not as they had not become a massive band! I have also read that Hooky used to sign and sell JD records and merchandise to collectors and dealers sometime back. Must have made a mint! Any help, advice or posted images would be great - thanks!

From what I've seen on eBay in recent years, I would suggest that it's a fool's errand to try and buy an Ian Curtis autograph. You would most likely buy a fake, or at best something you can't be entirely sure about. You'd also be spending/wasting a load of money doing it.

Something best left to idiots.
