Depends on what the signature is on....a record sleeve, piece of paper etc.
Theres an archive that collects past ebay sales where one can check current rates that collectibles go for, be it lps, books, signatures etc.....but I cant remember....ah, got it:go and check ''popsikes'', there you can rummage through old auction sales.

But never rush to assume it's authentic. There are many cases of fake signatures so the hunt for a genuine Ian signature should be done with extreme caution. Who wouldn't like to get your £500 for little effort?

If it's on eBay it's probably fake. Hardly any real ones are ever sold, you'd need a lot of provenance to be anywhere sure about it. Autographs are a good way of throwing money away.

Thanks! We know this is genuine...the owner got it off IC personally at Eric's. He did three for her but two have disappeared.....

It's all about the provenance. Do tell us more about how these signatures were obtained at Eric's please.

Hi there, the signature is one of three that Julie McCulloch --sister of Ian Mac E&B -- got IC to sign at Eric's. They were all on scraps of paper. She mounted one on a cereal packet with sellotape and pins for the wall. We expected to find all three in an old suitcase in her loft. Unfortunately there is only 1 amongst some great ephemera of the time; letters from Julian Cope, original lyrics by Holly Johnson, a letter from Pete de Freitas, various press cuttings and photos etc.

With that provenance, I would say worth a few hundred. Maybe worth trying Omega Auctions?

Here's my Ian Curtis signature, also obtained from Eric's. Feel free to use it as a comparison. Also a price, which may help answer your questions. Mine weren't in the best condition, otherwise I would thing they would have gone for more, probably around the £600 mark.

I'm not sure about this. First: The black ink looks strangely fresh to me. Secondly, what's up with the jovial swirl below his name? Is that typical for IC signatures? Thirdly, everyone knows that Ian was not very well during the show, he had to be helped off stage during Decades, or so the story goes. So how does someone manage to obtain an autograph from someone who's hardly able to stand? (I'm assuming that usually autographs are given after a show and that band members are locked up in their dressing room before the show.)
I also wonder about the supposedly missing autographs from the other members. With all prior questions I'm feeling a bit agnostic about this: Can't prove they were there, can't prove they weren't.
It seems to be raining original autographs as of lately, or am I just imagining things?

A friend of mine was at the soundcheck and in the dressing room with the band prior to the show so it's possible - the jury's still out on its authenticity though.

The bottom line with any autographs is the same, if you weren't there you'll never know for sure.

I actually bought that most recent one off eBay. The guy had a good story to go with it. I’ve been trying to get it authenticated since I bought, but haven’t had much luck. Not because people are saying it’s fake, just that there aren’t any out there to compare to. Oh well, I’m hoping it’s real. I’ll probably just have it framed.

There is an underline on my autographs - see pic above. Not quite as swirly, but that kind of thing may depend on what he was/wasn't writing on.

I compared it to the one that was on the Unknown Pleasures EP that was authenticated and it looks pretty similar. Everyone I talked to from professional agencies said the same thing. There just aren’t enough real examples out there to compare to. Oh well, If it’s real, then great! I’d not, oh well, I’ve spent 400 on worse.

Posted Oct 07, 2012 #12 I too have Ian,s autograph I obtained it at the Derby Ajanta. Ian was polite and signed the back of a fanzine I had some members of the support band xl5 also signed it. The one from popsike is dubious I know a collector of factory stuff and he told me it was a fake so....caveat emptor I have since added to the fanzine with other Factory related artists Vini, Kevin Hewitt and Peter Hook..now if only I could get Stephen and Barneys autograph on the same page...
