Is this a hoax, d'you think?

Did IC play melodica at the Leigh Festival in 79 (he did not IMO), and why would he bring 2 of them to the festival?

And why would he tell the stage manager he could keep them both?

One of the more far-fetched hoaxes you'll see. David Sultan will probably buy them though!

Yeah, what song would the melodica have been used on? I don't recall hearing one on the tape. Very, very dodgy. You can't really see the "JD" label properly because the photo is so small.

Wonder if his Hacienda speakers are a con as well?

if you look through all his items you see lots of connection to tractor and deeply vale, perhaps there's something to this?

to be honest you could buy any melodica and it's all the same really, it's not unique or signed or identifiable in any way. the sticker on the back doesn't do it for me.

What were they doing in August 79 that required the use of a melodica then? Or was this Ian's way of relaxing pre-gig, by tootling away?

And how does the seller know it is genuine?  The seller was not the stage manager was he?

We (at JDC) know the seller and we know they were on the staff at the festival.

That doesn't mean they can't be on the blag though, does it? Two melodicas, one with a little sticker saying "JD" on the back? Left at a gig several months before they were using a melodica?  Even if the plan was to play a warped version of Atmosphere at Leigh, or to create the siren sound at the start of Disorder by farting into the melodica and running it backwards through Barney's Melos Echo unit, it is still a bit of a long shot. Good luck to him though, he's made £175 out of two melodicas.

At least one person I know on here has one that Barney threw into the crowd at a New Order gig - what would they be worth?

I was just thinking that myself, TJ!! What would mine get, I wonder (caught by me at Sheffield in 87). There'll be Barney's DNA on it, for sure (along with mine, and my childrens'!).

As for JD ever using a melodica at a gig, well it just didn't ever happen, did it? Seeing as how the first song which featured a melodica was In a Lonely Place (and even then I'm not sure whether they practiced this enough times to even play it).

Well, just about the only likely candidate would be Atmosphere, like TJ says. Listen to the intro to Chance on the Piccadilly Radio session. A melodica wouldn't be out of place.

But it's far fetched. They didn't even play Atmosphere (unless they played it between Sound Of Music and Transmission - or it was scrapped)

Did any of the other bands on the bill use melodica?

I've just stuck a little sticker on the back of one of my identical Hohner Soprano Melodicas. At least mine get used for playing Joy Division songs!

A leap of faith needed on this one me thinks ...

I have never seen Ian on any pictures or heard any stories regarding his skills on the old lip blower.

IC's second melodica is now for sale on eBay, with an even higher 'buy it now' price than the first, 220 pounds (!)

i recieved my j.d. melidica this morning. i too have/had my doubts as well. here is the comfirmation? letter.
this is to confirm that this hohner melodica was one
of several that belonged to ian curtis of joy division
and this one and another were left by him on stage at
leigh festival 1979and were retrieved by myself- the
stage manager of the event.

this is signed by the stage manager of the time. which according to jdc is true.
he is also the seller.
i agree some work needs to be done to authenitise these items, and would be grateful for any factual feedback.
