It may well be genuine since we know IC owned at least one Soprano (one which remains in Steve Morris' collection of JD memorabilia, as it appears in the Jack interview).

However, the question remains, why did he bring them on stage?

There has never been any reports of IC playing one of these things on stage, let alone pictures.

I'm not having a go at the buyers here, I just want to find out why! Could it have been used on another song (other than IALP) after all?

Which in itself begs another question - if the one Ian owned is in Steve's collection, how come two others "Ian owned" have now turned up for sale on eBay?!  Just how many melodicas does one non-player need, and I guess the $64,000 question - why would he just let someone else have them in the first place?

ive been in touch with the leigh stage manager today, and exchanged a few emails with him. i am under no illusion that he is telling nothing but the truth. he mentioned they/ian had several & he is very adament about it.
the stage manager was also the manager of 'tractor' & the organiser of 'deeply vale festivals', hes also co-wrote a book with mick middles about the festivals. and he ran a record label near manchester. he is one of the main advisors & sources of information for various websites etc on these subjects.
also, can you imagine ian after their set. getting pissed with all the lads from
fac & zoo. & some guy asks if he wants his childish meodicas back. i know what id say. ' no mate, you can have em'.
still, lets see if hooky can shed any light on it.

No matter how bona fide everyone says this guy is, it still doesn't answer the question of WHY would IC have on stage 2 - 2, no less - bloody instruments that he would never, ever play? It's as likely as Hooky having a special set of frigging bongos, for the JD Unplugged bit!

I'm sorry but until someone can give a reasonable explanation, I shall always treat this sale as a shaggy dog story.

IC's shortage of cash was oft-muted - if he had to resort to cleaning the dressing rooms for some fag money, do you think he would be so free and easy with his, erm, stage melodicas?

So did he say anything about IC actually playing them?

Or were they just his mascots on stage?

That's a good question.  Did the manager say whether or not Ian played them during the show?

he cant recall ian playing them off hand. but as far as any of the other bands playing
a melodica i just cant see it, as they were a the time a childs toy & not in vogue at all as a reputable instrument. the teardrops & bunnymen at the time were still basically lead, bass & drums/machine?/maybe keyboard. who was on stage before j.d. ?
if we can count them out, then all that is left is the truth.
that they were somehow in ians possession when he went on stage. we dont know
if he played/intended to play or whatever reason.
still, the stage/event manager is adamant that the band/ian had several at the time, and two were left by ian & thats why he asked him if he wanted them back. and he didnt.if they wernt ians, then he would of said they wasnt his.
steve morris has got one of them !!!!!!!
we took a chance on buying them when everyone else doubted. with a bit more info, hopefully from the band. then this will get resolved at some point...

I think you're jumping to conclusions there. Any punk punter worth his salt at that time should have been aware of the fact that in reggae the melodica played an important part (allegedly, it was Augustus Pablo who drew Curtis' attention to the instrument).

Will we ever know just how many after-concert backstage jam sessions on melodica and kazoo went unrecorded in those heady days? The definitive book on post-punk won't be written until it has an entire chapter devoted to these instruments!

All kidding aside, I too find it odd that IC would have brought along more than one to this festival site in the middle of nowhere.

i know of the augustus pablo raggae connection. but i was thinking more about how widely they were used in the punk/new wave era in the late 70's & how people at the time concieved melodicas. i grew up in salford in the 70's 80's and they were ten a penny & every kiddie had one at some point. a bit like k'nockers & whirly tubes...
i can only say that we do not know the circumstances of why ian had two melodicas
with him. i say why not ! we dont know what went on beforehand. theres a million
reasons why. maybe he didnt want to leave them backstage during their performance(too many scousers ha,ha!). etc etc etc.

Believe me, any Scouser worth his salt would have been after the amps and synths rather than them bleedin' melodicas!

He probably lost all interest in the melodicas after finding that giant turd they apparently went on about all day.

An earnest French journalist appeared backstage at the Leigh festival hoping to interview Joy Division about their dark vision and the deeper meaning of their music. He was disapointed to be told that the band were busy in an outside toilet investigating an exceptionally long turd  that one of them had discovered. Reputedly it was as long as a man's forearm.

Did the journalist get his interview ( and was it published) or walk away in Gallic disgust? Alas I think it is safe to assume that the fate of the turd will only be ever guessed at.

The interview became a review instead, and it was panned as being a load of crap.

I showed to Bernard the info on the famous Melodicas yesterday night backstage after New Order live set in Chicago. He did say that they must be from Ian and they did use them.
