david, this is the man who didn't believe 'Procession' was one of their songs. no recollection of it whatsoever.

Either the smell from that turd in the bogs at Leigh is lingering, or there is some serious bullshit going on here with these melodicas.

I find it hard to believe that for an instrument that no-one can actually claim to have seen Ian use, the band needed not 1 but 3 (or more) of them around just in case at their gigs.

Item description of new ebay listing:
In 1979 Joy Division played at Leigh Music Festival [Factory meets Zoo Halfway] and Ian Curtis left two of his Hohner Melodicas on the stage after their set and he also had several more with him backstage in the dressing room. .The Stage Manager went into the dressing rooms which were in a house behind the stage and asked Ian if he wanted the two melodicas from the stage and he said no you can have them and these other bloody ones as well.!!!!! I had offered these remaining melodicas to the Ian Curtis film researchers but all seems to have gone quiet on that front so now I will put a further one on ebay. This is one of those melodicas which has been sat in a box in an attic until now along with some photocopies of press cuttings about Leigh festival. This fully working Hohner Melodica has a small paper sticker[ slightly worn with age] saying J D on the back. It will come with a signed certificate of authenticity from the stage manager of the Leigh Music Festival in 1979 to say where the melodica came from. HAPPY BIDDING e mail enquiries hawkethos@which.net Joy Division and New Order fans will know that the band actually eventually had a case with quite a lot of these instruments during New Order tours as well - the use of these melodicas as an instrument on New Order tours is inherited from Ian's introduction of the instrument during Joy Division days.

i will do, ive been busy today so i'll email him tomorrow. see how his story has changed and find out how many boxes ian had with him.
ive emailed bernard all the relevant facts(inc the ex-bernard gibson guitar he tried to flog me for a quid under two grand) and hopefully when his summer commitments end he might be able to shed some light on the subject.if he remembers of course.
this bloke looks to be trying it on. why didnt he just sell one and put a £1000 reserve on it. if he thinks he can just slip the odd melodica out now and again on ebay and not get noticed then hes even more gullable than me & mr sultan....
i keep you posted....

PS : for sure a Marshall ampli of Joy Division looked pretty a bad idea on ebay... Let's get for a more rocky band... Page/Plant...

hey i like the line
Joy Division and New Order fans will know that the band actually eventually had a case with quite a lot of these instruments
How many can one produce from such a case maybe Rabbit in the hat comes to mind ..
Anyway one must be on ones guard in such times and treat as suspicous otherwise bid away and make someone rich !!

i recieved a reply from the seller who explained that besides the two on stage there was a box with a couple more in. in the house at the back of the stage. he's keeping one himself & might delist the one on ebay cause its creating confusion.
the thing that gets me is looking at the sellers past, credentials, ebay sales & the general nature of him, everything seems 100% ok as far as i can see.
just the melodica mystery to resolve...

Will if this story is true, it is consistent with Ian's giving nature described in Debbie's book.

Who cares about buying something no-one ever saw him play. It's like having "ian's kettle" or "ian's pint glass" or "ian's pen". Maybe it is and maybe it isn't, we'll never know so what's the point of owning it.

As this thread is now being quoted on a current EBay listing I feel it's important for me to state that while I thought the harmonica was genuine back in 2005 subsequent events have eroded my confidence.
No evidence has surfaced to prove the harmonica was used and perhaps most importantly the film footage of the Leigh event that the original seller of the harmonica also claimed to have hasn't surfaced either.
The fact that such valuable footage hasn't found an outlet after all this time raises serious doubts as to whether it exists, and that in turn erodes my confidence in the harmonica story.
I cannot say if the harmonica was used by Joy Division or not but I haven't seen any provenance to back up the claim.
Unfortunately a number of Joy Division artefacts have surfaced over recent years which have dubious provenance and sadly this means that caveat emptor must apply for JD memorabilia.

i always presumed ,by reading plenty topics here, where this item cropped up every time so often, that it was a known ''treppenwitz'',as an ''hewittus fakoffus'',if you will . well, now it's officially known as a fake .
