does anybody know what this song is actually about?

i cant seem to grasp it.

was he saying we live in a lonely place because there is no god? surely if he meant this it would be on a lonely place?

or does it mean something else?

i am a bit perplexed,

Howard.

any comments gratefully received

Possibly one of the band would confirm this but in the absence of the written lyrics I'm not entirely sure that it was titled "In A Lonely Place" at the time it was written - I have a theory that this title may have come about afterwards - maybe when the single was about to be recorded/released. We know the original (different)  lyrics were titled "Misplaced" - but at some stage the song was called "Little Boy" - early setlists of New Order had this as its title if memory serves me correctly. I would guess that Ian's title for the song as it stood in the final take was "Little Boy" - can anyone confirm?

An early example of the band taking a film title to name one of their songs?

Anyone made a recent attempt at deciphering the lyrics to 'Misplaced'  probably the last lyrics Ian committed to tape? Or Ceremony from the same rehearsals?

IALP (Early Vocals, Take 1)

Closer to heaven…

Now with the loss of light
Changes that may collide
Waltz down a riverside
Changing the way to light

Land that may never shine
Faces we’ll never find
Field with the land aflame
Changing from night to waste

Daytime will break our lives
Touching the wasted night
Lifetime will never shine
Hoping we'll never die

Hope you’ll be given pride
Hoping is also pride
Drawn to another state
Wasting your time away

Breakthrough the dream with me now
Breakthrough the dream with me now
Breakthrough the dream with me now
Repulse others with me now
Breakthrough the dream with me now...

Waltz to another each time
Now I don’t know what I look like
Now I can see you’re all left out
How I wish you were home

Wish you were here
Walking away
Walking away through the dream to you now...

IALP (Early Vocals, Take 2)

Closer in Heaven’s device
Treading the silent daylight
Chasing a shadow that runs
Closer, I’m pulling into God

Time for a movement to pass
Time for all mortals, be alive
Changes heaven with fire
Changing the way you lie

Walking away from the start
Two worlds and each day leave apart
God's wrath draws closer and chimes
Calling me over each time

*Hums
Breakthrough the dream with me, me...
Breakthrough the dream with me, me...
Breakthrough the dream with me, me...
*Hums

Now that it’s final, we’ll die
Ages that fight, we won’t mind
All those reacting are stabbed
Wish you were here with me now
Wish you were here with me now

Oddly enough, i2 just listened to this this morning at 3am lol. It seems to me to conjure up visions of an ancient battleground and this song is a lament sung by one of the losing soliders who are facing death at the hands of their victors. Make of that what you will. You can read my decipherment of the lyrics here http://lwtua.websitetoolbox.com/post/alt-lyrics-for-early-versions-in-a-lonely-place-7258022?pid=1286131386

Those early lyrics for 'Misplaced' could perhaps refer / relate to the scenarios / comments that Ian made during the hypnosis session with Bernard ...that took place around the same time ?

That's plausible, and quite possible, particularly as didn't these recordings and hypnosis occur somewhat concurrently? Excellent insight, thanks for that!

Only my suggestion - ref the lyrics - but these events were close in time, with the hypnosis session during the first week of May (4th ? ) and the recording sessions of the rehearsals / demo's likely during the first two weeks  of May

IMO, it seems as if Ian hadn't really got to the point of settling on a final set of lyrics for IALP, judging from the rehearsal tapes. He was still trying different lines, seeing what fitted, so the song is kind of "unfinished". (To an extent the same is probably the case with Ceremony).
Actually, until the 'Heart and Soul' boxset came out (and we heard Ian singing IALP for the first time), I never thought that IALP was written by JD at all - I had always kind of assumed that Peter Saville merely designed the record labels of Ceremony b/w IALP so that both labels looked the same in terms of typography, and that was why it said "Written by JD" on both sides of the record. I took the lyrics to be a personal homage/tribute to IC, written by New Order after his death. But obviously, nowadays I know different.

I personally think the ialp title new order used doesn’t really reflect the lyr as to what he was trying to say . That’s to convey . And the song was known before as little thboy or as misplaced as you said

If memory serves, "Misplaced" was never an official title. I think it referred to the rehearsal tape being "misplaced" at some point in time. Don't know the full story. New Order listened back to the tape when they were trying to finish it and Ceremony, trying to transcribe Ian's lyrics (resulting in a lot of alternate lyric sets for the songs early on, more so for Ceremony before they settled on one draft).

Early New Order setlists indicate the song was originally called "Little Boy," but apparently the name remained on some of the later ones even after the Ceremony/In a Lonely Place single came out. Who knows why.

As for "In a Lonely Place," Ian had a poster full of old movie titles. He took from it "The Sound of Music," in addition to that movie being one of his personal favorites. "In a Lonely Place," a 50s movie, was also on the poster. I suppose it's possible Ian did not pick that title himself, though. Either way, it's the most appropriate title for the song, in my opinion. Maybe the "full" title should have been "Little Boy in a Lonely Place." That has a nice ring to it.

Good luck getting a straight answer from Bernard, Peter, or Stephen! It's been both years and years full of hard drugs.

Well I don’t understand it and I wish they had never released it as a song as it caused me a lot of mental problems and damaged my belief system in trying to understand it

I am very sorry to hear that. For me, I have always loved the song. It might even be my favorite JD tune. It always made me feel less alone, like Ian understood and felt the kinds of feelings I was for years when I first heard the song.

it was like the jfk murder and later 9-11.....a moment everyone remembers where they were!
