Has anyone seen a copy of this

http://www.joydiv.org/bk35.htm

and is it any good?

I see that one just went on ebay for 9.99 to a certain Mr Hewitt. I guess it’s photocopied stylings will be ripe for a reprint now.

As it says in the foreword: "It is for the benefit of those fans of Joy Division that may not be acquainted with the band's history through having discovered them too late, or through the general lack of information and surfeit of misinformation in the general music press." .... "With the help of longtime fans I was able to compile a fairly extensive scrapbook collection of press cuttings and general information, and it is on these scrapbooks that this story is based." So it's the story of JD, starting with the early Warsaw days, and it also covers early New Order. Back in late '82 when it came out it was definitely very useful and worthwhile. Now, many years later and with all the information and publications that have surfaced since it's perhaps not that essential. Still, a very nice effort to say the very least.

Mr Hewitt had better expect a letter form me if he does try to reprint this...

I was planning a ltd ed signed reprint myself. And I actually *do* own the copyright in this, and have asserted it.

nice to see it was appreciated!

It's more likely it will be exhibited somewhere by Hooky/Hewitt, along with whatever other bits they can source.

Unfortunately Ozit have form in this arena.

http://www.beefheart.com/zigzag/books/abbatozappa.htm

In 2005 they reprinted the 1970’s Captain Beefheart booklet of press reviews, photographs and articles “The Lives And Times Of Captain Beefheart” – but they retitled it and added a couple of shoddy Zappa articles. Selling for £16...didn’t even credit the original compilers/authors

If I were you I’d keep an eye out for it making an appearance.

I just put a bid in on THIS photocopied edition of "Index".

After placing the bid I noticed that the same seller had sold an identical photocopy on June 12th. Is the seller just knocking out fresh photocopies or was there an official photocopied re-release of this book.

I don't mind paying if it is official - but will feel ripped off if these are just fresh photocopies.

Photocopying breaches copyright, assume it unofficial.

well, from the picture, it *looks* like one of mine.

If you can get me a picture of the staples in the middle, I can verify it to be original or not.

And if it isn't, the eBayer will be hearing from me about copyright...

Thanks Craigie that's cheered me up! I'll post a photo of the staples once I get it in the mail. I take it then that you did do an official reprint?  I'd also love a signature on the book if possible (we'll wait to see if it's genuine - I'm not going to get you to sign a fake!)

He's not just sold two copies - if you page through his feedback - the first non-postive one is from another sale of Index on 12th May

the auction ended with 120+ gbp....well over my limit.i've contacted the seller & by the way he ran 'raw' records & had the chance to sign 'warsaw' (a year prior to the name swapping) ,but didn't !that must've hurt in hindsight ,but there for he put 'form(&substance)' on the market .brilliant story! i asked him if he could join J.D.C. & share his priceless memories.i hope he does!

here's the reply lee sent me:" I'm amazed as well. At the time I was planning a deluxe version on special paper and other stuff but it never happened.

I never met any of Joy Division. I published the book because I loved their music and I knew Clinton Heylin because I helped him with his book on Bob Dylan. Through Clinton I met Craig Wood (no relation) and they wrote the book as they are both Manchester boys and had been around when JD started.

When I was running Raw Records I received a casette of 4 or 5 tracks from Warsaw. But it wasn't that good. Years later I did a deal with Rob Gretton and paid him £2,000 for the rights to release some of the tracks as the Warsaw 7 inch EP. An "official" bootleg.

A very limited number of the Form (And Substance) book were signed by Clinton and Craig with a gold pen. I have one copy and am unsure if to keep it or sell this one as well. I do not have any other copies. I only ever kept the two - and didn't recall one was autographed by the authors until the other day.

I'm not 100% sure what you would like me to do. You certainly have my permission to copy these details and put them on the website.

Another small point. The JD photos I'm offering are the prints from Kevin Cummins as we used a lot of his photos in the book. I forget how much I paid him to use his photos in the book but he was very fair.

If you want me to add anything about what I have done over the years please let me know the topics.

Thank you for posting it - I'm sure that helped a lot. If I decide to offer the other copy I will let you know. I would like to keep it but I have had it on my bookshelves since 1988 and never looked at it - so perhaps it would be far better going to someone who will give it more appreciation than me ! regards          lee"

I've got an original copy of 'Index' which Craig sold or possibly even gave to me when it first came out. For some bizarre reason though, I decided to colour it in with pencil crayons! I was just wondering whether this would devalue it? Not that I would ever sell it mind...

I really should drop in more often...

Adman: To paraphrase Wallace & Gromit - The wrong staples. I'll be contacting the seller of these with a cease and desist shortly.

So, Lee Wood's still about? well well well... I never did see any statements for sales or receive royalties... but I did sign about 200 copies of the Black cover...

The Index 30th Anniversary reprint is in planning and pre-production. Which means I've done the costings and re-set the type, basically.

Not sure *who* owns F&S these days... but it's 25 years in 2013, and I guess I might get my copyright back then... I'll have to take expert legal advice. As opposed to a mateur legal advice, of course...
