That seems like an odd thing to say because to me, the HATYM/Apollo version of "I Remember Nothing" is as good as it gets performance-wise (certainly not video-wise) and I dearly wish it had been filmed/recorded properly (a la the "Taras Shevchenko" video 2 years later) as it is absolutely staggering.  I keep watching/listening to it over and over.

I see what you mean. It's not the performance quality, because that's pretty good. It's the sound of the recording which I find very harsh and lacking in dynamics. There are recordings of IRN of Wintergardens, Electric Ballroom and even of Queen's Hall that sound more appealing. Especially a song like IRN needs good lows and bass, and those are pretty much absent in the video.

Yes, the audio recording is lousy and the video is absolutely horrid (did JD really perform in near-darkness all the time??) but the performance still shines through.  This rendition is like 2 minutes and 45 seconds longer than Bournemouth, for example!  It's absolutely colossal.

The JD Central page Joy Division on Film says

The Apollo gigs were recorded on VHS by Richard Boon.

Tony Wilson took them to London and put them through a standards converter for HATYM. He doesn't know if there's complete footage of gigs or where the original VHS recording is.

An Ideal For Living book by Mark Johnson says the entire concerts were taped. This is probably correct - but  when it came to compiling the Here Are The Young Men and Substance videos they probably decided to use the higher quality Super-8 films of songs wherever possible.

(Richard Boon is still alive and well, as far as I can tell, his Facebook page is pretty private.)

Well my wife is a 'Facebook friend' of Richard Boon so he can't be that private!!

Surely it's common knowledge that the entire two nights were recorded and still exist in full...had the power cable not been so rudely cut in Macclesfield four years ago, some of us might even have got to have seen them!

I say: Put those two nights on one DVD already and donate the proceeds to a fund for the benefit of children with epilepsy. No greedy motives, no clashing of egos, no annoying companies getting in the way. Can't see why it couldn't be like that.

That would be great. I'd gladly contribute to that :-)

Perhaps a Kickstarter for Plan K and the Apollo footage could work? Since the footage is never going to be good enough to do a general release.

There's really no need, it'll be out when they want it out.

I'm a facebook friend of Richard Boon's too - I see him out and about occasionally - the last time was Thursday at the 100 Club.
