indeed i had to double check many times, cause i'm also always mixing up those dates!

but i want really to take the opportunity to express my appreciation for your list, Darkman: something that during so many years i've never achieved to do; and this was due to the large amount of available bootlegs, which made me think of a large amount of available recorded gigs...

in fact i am quite surprised of the small amount of recorded gigs, if compared to other bands of the same (more or less!) period, as The Cure, Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy...

Thank you, I'm glad it helped. I'm in the processes of updating it right now and re-posting it. It should be up in the next couple of days.........cheers

That is a great question Sir. Of course there are recordings out there that a very select few have heard. Hooky has some goodies in his tape collection, gigs and rehearsal tapes.

I had a conversation with Hooky not to long ago, about master tapes from gigs, that were given to a sound-guy. I was in the process of trying to get these tapes from a person I met, but after working with Hooky and "someone else", they didn't end up being the real deal. Hooky was going to buy the whole collection of tapes, and then have them transferred and remastered. This fell through. Even though nothing came of this, Hooky did remember a sound guy that was given tapes from gigs.

There is also the reels Harry DeMac is said to have. He was recording a live album for JD, that was to be released in Germany; Harry was upset over lack of payment, and took the reels with him....where are those.

Also, I believe their were friends of the band who got rehearsal tapes, and possibly some gigs. One of these people came forward with a tape in 2004 on JDC, but the pressure of certain members scared him away. Nobody has heard from him since. The tape he had was real, and had some exceptional material on it.

Recently a song from a unknown soundboard recording from the Lyceum Ballroom showed up on the Recycle. Before that, all that was thought to exists for that night was audience recordings; and low and behold a soundboard recording is out there. But from what I understand, only a few songs of it exist. The tape might of been improperly stored, and damaged.

Next thing you know, a few people got copies of the VARA Radio Station master. That was a huge find…………………..

As with any band, you are going to have some people with high connections that will have a little or a lot more then what is released. It just the natural of the collecting side of a band's music.

Search the name "Bedge" on the forum. It's a very intresting thread to read.

The tape itself, was theorized to be a Rehearsal tape from February/March 79. Here is the track listing.

1. No Love Lost
2. Leaders of Men
3. Day of the Lords
4. Shadowplay
5. Ice Age
6. New Dawn Fades
7. Digital
8. Insight
9. The Kill
10.Transmission

TJ, a fellow JDC member said he talked to a few high ups and said "There are apparently quite a few rehearsal tapes in existence, not all of them still in the possession of the band"!

Check it out DL, it's a intresting read. I never heard the samples, I wasn't even a member at that time, I would of loved to heard the two samples thou; mainly "The Kill".

I had a friend, who I trust his word completely when it comes to JD, tell me it was real..................cheers

2 tracks were posted - only about a minute of the Kill (ie the intro and first verse) was uploaded, and the full No Love Lost appeared - but unfortunately some had a go at Bedge for not divulging more rather than being grateful for what they had - so Bedge left and took down the posts.

Thanks for the info Lee. Really, I thought both were samples, but to find out a complete sample of 'No Love Lost" was shared is amazing. Did anyone save these samples?

The original wma-files can be found here. You'll find that the tape must be in rather poor shape, with drop-outs, volume fluctuations and a virtually non-existant right channel. That's why there are also mono FLACs with just the left channel audio.

@Darkman - Thanks for your efforts that went into your list on page 1 (copied below). A really useful resource. The other day I realised that the list was made 9 years ago and thought it might be worth updating with the following 3 gigs:

Middlesbrough Rock Garden, Sep 14, 1977 (surfaced 2011)

Rainbow Theatre, London, Nov 10, 1979 (surfaced 2012)

Newcastle City Hall, Oct 4, 1979 (not sure when this became available, can anyone confirm, details are scant on the gig page, but its not on the list anyway)

I am interested to see where you would place them as regards sound quality on this list, and what ranking you would give them. I'd roughly place 10 Nov Rainbow between Cologne and Odeon, and Newcastle between Odeon and Moonlight 4 April. Rock Garden is better than I expected for a 1977 live recording, as such I'd probably place it just below Apollo 28 Oct & before Nashville 13 Aug.

Also I am curious as to if you feel that the 2012 Analog Loyalist remastering of ULU warrants bumping this gig up the list a couple of places. I think it elevates it above Lyceum. Just my opinion.

Don't want to tread on toes, so not amending the list myself, but am just wondering where you would place those 3 gigs in your list?

I only just listened to Kant Kino for the first time. Is there a club for people dedicated (or stupid) enough to play that gig in full?! Your rating of 5 is very generous. Every time the tape speeds up, it sounds like a chainsaw starting up. I think I might have nightmares about that tape and Ian sounding like a chipmunk.

Joy Division recordings that are available to the public. I tried to list these from Best sound-quality to worst! Sound quality listed last in ( )

1. Preston Warehouse, Feb 28, 1980. (9+)

2. Les Bain Douches, Dec 18, 1979. (9)

Hi Dave_79, Thank you. I've been out of the Joy Division loop for sometime, but I would put the Middlesbrough gig at 8+. As far as the other two, I've not heard them (don't have them), but the fine people that run this site do an amazing job, so I would trust the information they've provided in the Concert section.
