Joy Division apparently covered the song "On the Way" from the film Nosferatu, when they played live at Rainbow Theater on November 10, 1979. It was the bizarre, mellotron intro to "Dead Souls". I had never known this previously.

Did JD ever do the song again?

Citation for info (you have to scroll down to the gig date for info): http://www.new-order.net/jd/gigs/jdgigs.html

Joy Division didn't cover this song, they just played the record as an intro music.

I agree with Ricardo, its taken from the Soundtrack of the flim Nosferatu.

I have the Lp in my collection.

The flim was directed by Werner Herzog,Who was one of Ians Favourite flim Directors.
Herzog of course directed `Stroszek`.

No, no, no. Pete Hook covered it with a food pedal!

Couldn't resist,

The old link no longer works, but there is a new one:

Great, forboding music. It sounds like the breathing pattern of some strange creature.

The soundtrack intro is a perfect tool to check the correct pitch of the Rainbow recording. For many years it circulated with a mellotron choir of smurfs.
