Thank you for posting that! It looks awesome. What a great image of Ian at the end of the trailer.

Below is the US Amazon link for purchasing what looks like the documentary.  (A March 25th release.)

It is by far the best Joy Division documentary/film I've ever seen. Stylish and comprehensive in equal measures. It also looks like the Bowdon Vale footage, though not shown in full, has been remastered from the original super-8 source, or at least a professional VHS transfer. Excellent.

A couple of questions:-

1) Does anyone know how much footage of the band there was in the Malcolm Whitehead film? I am already familiar with the performances at Bowden Vale but like most people have never seen the stuff from the recording of Unknown Pleasures. I agree it's really weird seeing Ian smiling on film (after all these years)!

2) Is the DVD of the doc scheduled for a UK release?

If a trailer's raison d'être is to whet the audience's appetite for the full release, this is definitely a successful trailer. I cannot wait for the DVD to come out.

Has this very informative interview with Grant Gee, taped in Toronto last year, ever been mentioned here? Check out http://www.mefeedia.com/entry/tiff-interview-joy-division-director-grant-gee/3509053/ .

What a truly heart-wrenchingly beautiful shot of Ian smiling at the end there.
It says it is in cinemas on 31 1 08.  Anyone know where?

Looks like 31/1/08 is the Australian release

According to the internet movie database it doesn't hit UK cinemas till May 2nd

I know it's been shown in Salford and Brighton already.....

How cool does this look (well worth the 40min wait - dial up), cannot wait for it's release.

40 minutes?  That's better than I fared, and I've got an 8Mb line!

Buffer buffer buffer...wicked shots though, more smiles in 30 seconds of film than JD have let out in 30 years!

Anyone know how much (if any) Plan K and Leigh Festival footage is in the doc?

There's a clip of Wilderness at Plan K in the doc, a fraction of it is in the trailer.

Leigh footage is totally not proven to exist as yet. No one has seen anything of it, not even a frame.

Someone's put it on YouTube, not so much buffering required.

Looks like they may very well have made the definitive J.D. documentary, I can't wait to see the whole thing!

Any Aussies out there. The film is screening at the Chauvel cinema in Paddington from February 7th. There is a competition in today's Sydney Morning Herald to win a pair of tickets to the preview on the 5th. Cannot wait to see it.

Saw this in San Francisco where it was screened at the YBCA last Friday.  It's definitely THE documentary on Joy Division, with plenty of material never seen before and quite funny and touching interviews.  As at least one person had noted, a bit of an antidote for the biopic, and in some ways a more interesting film.

Saw it at the IDFA in Amsterdam, excellent documentary. Enjoyed it immensely, much more so than Control.
