Joy Division are on the cover of the next issue of Record Collector Magazine out 22 May.
I assume therefore there should be a three or four page article as well. No idea what angle it will take or if it will have one of RCs Discographies with their chosen values.

in an older RC issue they listed the top ten JD rarities but could never find the article online (due to 'too expensive') or grab the mag itself.....maybe someone here has that info & could post it here?

I finally bought this today. It's funny how times change. Lots of places, like supermarkets, now sell magazines but they only sell the best selling rubbish so it was a while before I came across Record Collector. Fond memories ...

[rcjune2014s]

Anyway, three things I spot immediately: RC is now printed on cheaper paper, there might be an unpublished Ian Curtis photo on page 73 (anyone?), and RC seem confident the first pressing of Unknown Pleasures was on translucent red vinyl. The third point is very interesting because nobody else (certainly not JD Central) has ever categorically stated that this is the case. Indeed nobody else knows. To be blunt I wonder if they're taking information from unproven sources / guesswork but I am very happy to be corrected.

Their "TOP 14 JOY DIVISION UK RARITIES" at the end of the article is a very strange idea. If they'd opened it up to the TOP 15 JOY DIVISION WORLDWIDE RARITIES" the only addition would have been the extremely important and valuable Sordide Sentimental single which would have been the second most valuable on the list. But they didn't. Strange decision Record Collector!

Other omissions from the TOP 14 JOY DIVISION UK RARITIES are the 2007 box set http://www.joydiv.org/2007boxset.htm and the Ideal Beginning http://www.joydiv.org/I2.htm OK this was semi official but history suggests was legally issued and approved so I think it should have been included.

Here's the RC laundry list:
[RCmay2012]
(C) Copyright Record Collector

That's my take on the RC article but I'd like to know how all of you would list the TOP XX JOY DIVISION WORLDWIDE RARITIES" and their values [smile]

I think the IC pics on pages 73 and 68 are from the Rainbow Theatre London, Nov '79, all by photographer Barry Plummer.

Thank you for sharing, Toby. I had my hopes up for that "unpublished" photo, but I guess not.

What a poorly written article ... RC used to be the bible for vinyl collectors, shows how much times have changed.

Where are the entries on the rarity list for Sordide Sentimentale, the promo orange or yellow 10" 'Short Circuit' package, 'Komakino' green vinyl flexi or the Italian mis-press first issue of 'Still' ??

Sloppy journalism at best!

For those of you that didn't get a chance to read it - here's the earlier forum tab I started off on this piece of rubbish that deigns to call itself an article.....

The IC photo on page 73 can also be found on the back cover of one of the semi-official LWTUA Cleopatra 12" issues; http://images.junostatic.com/full/CS510807-01B-BIG.jpg

Regarding Sordide, if RC wanted to keep matters strictly 'UK' I fail to understand why 'Atmosphere' wasn't listed as a 'French import', which it certainly was; most copies were bought by British fans in British record shops. What annoys me about that omission is RC's selective attitude; whenever a comprehensive Beatles or Stones UK discography is printed it'll list all manner of import/export issues without hesitation - most of them utterly insignificant other than minor label variations and the like. Taking that into account, and as some of you have already pointed out, Sordide was a key release and RC had no business leaving it off.

Pat: I too was surprised - though not overmuch - to notice the absence of 'Short Circuit' in orange/yellow (though I've always harboured major doubts the yellow one actually exists; I'd only accept Erik's or Oyvind's word by way of confirmation); what appalls me is that this great little album featuring Joy Division's vinyl debut is not listed at all, another truly shocking oversight.

Let's not be too hard on them for failing to mention the green 'Komakino'; despite its alleged promo status it was never actually 'released' as such and, besides being hideously obscure even by JD standards, was in all likelihood pressed using the official plates by someone fannying around at the Lyntone plant. Or a more cynical soul might say it's another case of RC selectiveness: its bi-annual 'Rare Record Price Guide' still happily lists 'Cry Of Love' on red vinyl and 'The White Album' on blue - both of which were manufactured under identical circumstances as the green edition of 'Komakino' yet the latter is nowhere to be found in said publication (though I'm hardly qualified to voice an objective opinion on that; to these ears the meagre trio of numbers on that flexi is more valid than the entire Beatles back catalogue).

Sorry Toby, but there's no first-hand evidence whatsoever 'The Ideal Beginning' was semi-official (a phrase that's always puzzled me, like being half-pregnant or almost having cancer) so RC were quite justified in its omission - a very early discography from 1982 listed 'The Ideal...' as a 'fan-club edition' (chortle!) and I believe RC got rather a lot of stick for that one. Until a band member, or someone close to them around that period, steps up and confirms the EP (and its equally suspect companion 12") was issued with New Order's blessing I remain agnostic.

One final gripe: whoever proof-read this most recent discography wants his arse kicking; same edition of 'Closer' mentioned twice. Unlike the remainder of this piece that's not down to an ignorance of the band's history, but pure out-and-out slackness. Says it all, really. This could - and should - have been a terrific little article. Hopefully next time the editor will engage persons of a more knowledgeable bent. Joy Division's legacy should be immune from tamper, and it sure as shit deserves a lot more than the half-hearted tokenism we've just been presented with.

Sorry Lee

I wondered why nobody had started a thread on this topic!

Yes, let's continue the discussion at

Nah, don't be daft Musars. A million threads on here; I''ve started new ones myself then found out someone else has begun an almost identical one elsewhere on the site. And so many of us are irritated by that RC article wires were bound to get crossed. Lee was just giving y'all a pointer to previous opinions. Continue the debate wherever you see fit.

350125 is correct. Carry it on where and how you will. Probably easier from this one now - the other thread was - to quote 350125 "giving y'all a pointer to previous opinions".

Now we've got that straight we can merge the two into one and continue. All is OK - except in the RC quality control dept.

Sorry folks.

For some reason I got it into my head I'd started this thread, probably, well to be honest, definitely, because I did my post at 2am and full of wine! Then when I saw Lee's I was moved to apologise and that's confused everyone.

So, Musars, my fault, and my apologies [smile]

One I missed (italics are mine):

"To support the release of the album, Joy Division were booked to play a session for Piccadilly Radio in June of 1979, recorded at Pennine. Perversely, only Candidate from the album was aired."

Evidence, please?

I've got this, somewhere....I seem to recall they valued the Enigma version of 'AIFL' at £25 and Sordide at £50. Them's the days...

could anyone post a scan from RC/JD segments?found this article from the '14 edition but would be great to have a 'peek' at the discography plus price listing.copyright should not be a problem if it is in context with a review,i believe.

Sordide is only valued at £15, same as the AIFL 12" (Anonymous), Factory Sample is valued at £18.
