Thanks for your kind words, fellers....and let's not forget Marko is the 'realizer' of this thing; somehow he coaxed order from the appalling chaos I initially sent him, believe me, it looked nothing like the finished article. Glad you're enjoying it anyway; I hope there's something new in there for all on JDC.

As an ex- inhabitant of Leeds, Bradford and York this has made me all nostalgic. Just wish I'd been old enough to see JD at the time. Great article- much appreciated.

An excellent piece of work, congratulations to Julian for taking a detailed look at an aspect of Joy Division's history, he wrote his article with authority and confidence, seeking advice where he could and double checking his facts rather than simply ploughing on and peppering his project with opinion, as is often is the case (oh I can name those books)

It was a pleasure to be asked, and be in the position to be able to contribute to Julian's article, his enthusiasm shone through

SO, who's going to take on 'Joy Division in Lancashire' [wink]

Cheers
Colin Blades

(although sadly not the 'Colin Blades' mentioned in dmxi's post, although I am a very good musician, in our house anyhow)

I think I was being flippant, The lad you reference was born and raised in Beverly Hills, CA and is in his late 20's. (although we do have our Dads first name and mothers maiden name in common.........hang on a minute, could there more of a connection than I first thought :-)   )

Colin: Cheers for saying all them nice things...this sort of appreciation makes all that leg-work worthwhile. Joy Division in Lancashire...researching all those early Warsaw shows around Manchester would be a colossal task but I'll wager there are some cracking tales to tell - and quite a few gigs that haven't come to light yet too. Any volunteers? All ya need is a bus-pass, a notebook and a camera. And a very tolerant wife.

Brilliant stuff and thanks to your hard work there's another few venue images ticked off the list. Some cracking recollections in there, in particular the guy who said the band he saw were just awful and said the band were from Manchester.......having heard the early Warsaw stuff, he could easily have been talking about them.

Tongue in cheek here, natch.

Top work mate.

Much obliged Isolated. Nice words, and I thank you. Here's a post-script if you're interested; I didn't include this in the piece because I felt I'd waffled enough and was trying to avoid my own opinions, but that geezer from Buslingthorpe also mentioned there was no other band onstage that night, so far as he could remember...which made me think I was fed an unintentional red herring.

On balance it's unlikely a combo so obscure and impecunious as Warsaw would have traipsed over the Pennines for such a poxy gig, minus support/headliners into the bargain. I'd always been sceptical about this one but the rumour was there and had to be investigated. In addition a fellow member of JDC - closer to the band than anyone here - urged me not to dismiss the story out of hand, they could have played any number of undocumented shows outside of Manchester, so I forged ahead. Hence the 'colourful' local characters we meet in Part 2 the article.

True, Warsaw had already played Middlesbrough Rock Garden and The Swingin' Apple in Liverpool but they were well-established punk venues, The Primrose and The Hobby Horse most certainly weren't, oblique little establishments even by Leeds standards (the interior of The Hobby Horse made Roots look like the Four Seasons in New York, trust me). If Warsaw did visit the city it seems more likely they'd have played as support to more well-known bands at venues like Leeds Polytechnic (now the Metropolitan University) or the original F Club in Woodhouse, but as you saw in the article there's no first-hand evidence they ever did.

Point is, if it wasn't Ian Curtis screaming Warsaw's Mancunian bona fides at The Primrose in December 1977, then who the dickens was it?

I love the detective work myself mate. It's even better when you come up with something that's been missed over the years. Myself and a good few other lads spent a good 6 months collating as much info on all the known photo's of the band. There are still a few which have me stumped, which I might post on here at a later date. There's a pic of Ian with white shoes floating around with Bernard in the background, that picture has had me stumped for years. I even contacted Stephen by mail and asked him about it in Russia last year, even he couldn't remember the gig. I posted it on Facebook last night in a last gasp effort to nail the gig. If yer gonna use Facebook, you should try and use it to your advantage, so I copied in severeal writers, photographers and musicians of that era so they could assist. The good thing about Facebook is that when you tag someone such as Martin O'Neil (Bowden Vale photo's) Kevin Hewick etc...their friends can also see the picture. I have a couple of leads to chase up on, but I am pinning my hopes that the photo is proved to be the Brunel gig in November '78 supporting The Undertones/Rezillo's. There are only a handful of pics from '78 so this would be magic if it is Brunel.

Sorry to take it off topic, but it just goes to show how many likeminded people we have on here.

As I say I really enjoyed your piece and the more "rambling on" the better for me. It's good to get everything documented. Keep up the good work mate.

Wow, I'm intrigued by this unknown photo. As you say, we have a very limited choice of shots from 1978 and Brunel Uni would be a killer addition to JDC. Could you give me a link to the Facebook page? I'm not actually on there but quite a few recollections came via that site thanks to John Keenan's friends - no new images unfortunately, but that may very well change; I'm chasing down some fresh info as we speak. And as a curious follow-up to yesterday's discussion, I've just this very morning been given the number of a bloke who worked on security at the F Club in its various Woodhouse, Chapeltown and city centre locations and Futurama 79 too, so I reckon he'll have quite a story to tell. Let's see...

At first glance I'd say taken during the sound check (the footwear and the bods shifting flight cases / gear in the background) doesn't look like there's a stage - check Ians eve level , I've a theory, larger copy would be cool if possible.

cheers Colin

I agree. I was thinking sound check because of the white trainers and cans on the floor. There s a big '1' in the background which makes me think of a studio. Very harsh lighting from a low angle ... And what are the white squares at the top of the picture?

To put it another way, no idea whatsoever

Cheers for the input lads, I will work on getting a bigger copy, I know a lad who bought this photie back in the day. Also like the idea it's a studio, but I still reckon it's a gig. Soundcheck is definitely a possibility as well.

As for Eric's, unfortunately there are no known pics of the band from that venue mate. To the best of my knowledge pics are extremely rare from 77/78 with only 3 or 4 gigs having photographers in attendance (Electric Circus, Rafters and Factory)

Having spent 10 mins in Columbo mode, I think it's Birmingham University soundcheck. Notice the lighting rig and mic stand similarities.

The picture of IC in white trainers is almost too much. Is it possible someone photo-shopped them on as some kind of retrospective shoe endorsement. i.e Converse?

[tumblr_m9ww6dLV5I1rb2xaxo1_500]  [jd_stage1]  Could it be the same venue? Note the spotlights, with the same squares with white borders...
