Okay, now that I have tabbed out a few more Joy Division songs, I think I can start this thread for real, now.

There's a lot of JD songs, especially from the Warsaw-era, that lack tabs online. I am getting to the point of playing where I can start to pick out the guitar parts and play it by ear, so I thought I could tab out a few songs thus.

Disclaimer: Please note that these may or may not be 100% accurate, and I am doing my best with them.

Warsaw - Reaction

This is an old Warsaw song. No studio version of this song exists. I am referring to a rehearsal recording from August or September 1977. The pitch of said rehearsal varies between sources. My source is higher pitched and lasts for about 2:46. I believe the live version from Rock Garden, Middlesbrough (September 14, 1977) is two notes lower.

The strumming can vary. Bernard sometimes dampened the strings a bit with his palm. The guitar part isn't super consistent. Sometimes he plays the whole chord and then others he strikes one string. He also makes a few mistakes, resulting in a bum note struck or the wrong note in a riff. Just mix it up a bit when you play it and you should be fine. Listen to the song for the strumming timing.

That one shouldn't take too long. I actually wrote most of it a while back, but I couldn't figure out the solo. I have since figured it out, though, so it shall come soon.

Joy Division - The Sound of Music

This is one of their wilder songs, and one of only two (the other being "Interzone") where one of the band
members makes a lot of weird howling.

For this tab, I am referring mostly to the Peel session (November 1979) version, NOT the regular studio version.
Comparing both, the Peel session is slower and has an overdubbed riff at the end absent in the other version.
The studio version has the howling and a few other vocal/guitar overdubs. Live versions include the ending riff
at the end of the song to replace the chords. The notes played should be identical, however.

Glad you like it! Hope it is pretty accurate. I have played bass a bit in the past, and it is pretty fun and relatively easy, coming off of guitar.

If I had a decent tripod, I totally would film some tabs. [tongue]

Joy Division - New Dawn Fades (Live)

This is a tab of the live version of the song, from the Paradiso, Amsterdam show that took place on January 11, 1980. It is
different from the "Unknown Pleasures" album version.

Part of Joy Division's appeal was that though the band lacked a lot of technical talent, they made up for it in a lot of
interesting ways. Most songs they played would go through significant reworkings throughout the band's tenure, both in Ian's
lyrics and in composition. Bernard and Peter were quite good at experimenting with alternate riffs and the like when playing
live, even after "completing" a song by recording it in the studio. Here is one such example.


Intro (comes in at about 0:38). When playing it, strum any extra note every now and then, whilst keeping in time.

Main Riff (on this version, play until about 2:07). This part is particularly variant across all the versions. Bernard essentially just fingers the chords a bit every time. Sometimes he seems to only strike a few notes, other times he plays a full chord. It seems when Ian sings the first verse of the song, he is more prone to fingering the chords, and then during the second verse he strikes the full chords. Listen to this version for the specifics, but I say just rely on your own prerogative to play.  Play each chord for one bar and repeat.

Alternate Main Riff. I believe Bernard used power chords for most versions of the song, as described above (I won't say every single one, because I honestly do not know). However, if you want a brighter, better chord sound, play these chords as I described in the previous paragraph instead. Note that on the D chord you can put your pinkie on the third fret of the high e string intermittently to produce a higher tone that goes well with the song.

At 2:07, Bernard plays the ending section of the "Intro" until 2:19, when he resumes the "Main Riff." At 2:57, he plays the same ending section of the "Intro" until 3:22.


Ending. Begin at 3:22 to the end of the song. The second time you play the third subsection, play the G string at the ninth fret twice, not once.

Joy Division - Insight (No, I have not forgotten about "At a Later Date;" this was just really quick and easy)

A simple yet effective song that is quite often mis-tabbed. One of Peter's quintessential bass lines in Joy Division, making for quite a bouncy number.

Bass Riff. This is NOT what Bernard actually plays at ANY point in the song, but if you want to follow Peter's bass exactly, then you play this on guitar part during the verses.

Verse. The strumming seems straight forward, but you can mix it up slightly during the initial chord. Bernard did a lot during live performances.

Joy Division - Candidate (Live at Factory)

The third track off of Unknown Pleasures, and one of the more polarizing songs.

Bernard, the guitarist for the band, did not particularly like this song. In order to interest him, Martin Hannett, the producer of UP, played his guitar parts in reversed and through heavy distortion, which he liked. So, in order to play the actually guitar parts, you need to rely on live versions. The band rarely played the song live, perhaps because of Bernard's relative distaste for the song.

All of the live versions and the Piccadilly Radio session version are significantly shorter than the UP version, and all of them vary in lyrics and composition, somewhat. For this particular tab, I will be referring to the Factory/Russell Club, Manchester (July 13, 1979) version. Multiple versions of this gig exist, in varying pitches. I will be referring to the one with the most accurate pitch to the studio version I can find - FageOner's remaster.
