You've got to treat the very early recordings within their context, in my opinion. I quite like Gutz as a curiosity if nothing else.

Passover for me, probably, but I can't think of any song without a smidgen of charm.

"As You Said" and "The Drawback" are really the only unmemorable, crappy JD tracks for me. I like them all, but those two I've never been able to get into.

The Closer version of "Atrocity Exhibition" isn't that great, though. I don't know why people pick on "Auto-Suggestion"; took me a while to really like it, but still. I even like the early Warsaw stuff, especially "Inside the Line". If I had to pick a few early tracks of theirs that was REALLY utter crap, I'd say "You're No Good For Me" and "Lost".

If I had to pick a late track it would be "Incubation". It beats me why "Incubation" was used for the Substance (vinyl version) and "The Best Of Joy Division" over and above the far superior "Komakino"

Right

Sorry Michela but all four of those songs are classic JD tracks.

Sound of Music. Obvious lyrics and just generally pretty dull.

"The Drawback"

I really like it. The first JD bootleg I ever listened to in 1981 after a concert with my band - we played a cover version of New Dawn Fades - was a tape with the RCA-record on side one and Amsterdam on side two. Someone from the audience gave it to me as a gift.
And "All of this for you" (the Drawback) was the first song on the tape. It sounded so fresh and young and naive. I still really really like it. It reminded me somehow of '60s beat music, esp. the Kings (All of the day and all of the night)...

And I love the early stuff like Gutz and even You're no good for me...
These songs are really ruff and brutal, but Joy Division and esp. Curtis is somehow already there. One would expect from that songs, that Curtis might shout "F*ck the system" or "I hate everyone". But the lyrics are different. Curtis sings about personal relationships as if it would be a world war. I like that.

The only Joy Division song I really don't like and hardly ever listen to is "Failures of the Modern Man".

This is an interesting thread... Probably Glass, even though I still like it... for Joy Division standards, it ain't up there in my opinion. I don't think there's a bad song on Unknown Pleasures/Closer... a few people have said their least favourite is Colony?!?! I think it's fuckin brilliant

I'm amazed that Disorder is listed here. This was the first ever JD track I ever heard after buying UP simply on the strength of a review in one of the music papers back in the day, and it just blew me away having never heard anything before quite like it. In fact, I was going to say Day Of The Lords is my least favourite track as it always seems a bit of an anti climax when you've just heard the blistering raw beauty before it.

I agree about Disorder and Day of the Lords. Disorder has always been one of my favorite JD songs, it just has a unique sound overall, an amazing piece of musicDay of the Lords is just depressing after that. It's one of my least favorites, not a bad song but just in the wrong place on the album, especially paired with Candidate.

When I hear Disorder it takes me back to the first time I heard it and how I felt. It transplants me to my youth (if only for three and half minutes) and an overwhelming positive feeling.
