Hi all, New member here, hoping someone can help me out! I'm not a particularly macabre kind of bloke, but I was wanting to visit the graves of Wilson, Gretton and Hannett in Southern Cemetery. I have passed the cemetery numerous times and it is VAST so the chances of wandering around and finding them would be near impossible without some kind of direction. Does anyone have any clue where I would find them? I have looked all over the internet for info, but all I've come up with is Wilson being on the left of the main entrance, and Gretton on the left, so not much use!! I suppose I could ask at the offices, but don't want to look like a weirdo - it's much easier to hide behind a keyboard! I went to see Ian Curtis' memorial stone a few years ago (before it was stolen and replaced) but unfortunately the batteries died on my camera, which annoyed me somewhat! Anyhoo, any info anyone could give me on Wilson, Gretton and Hannett would be gratefully received. Thanks very much Ken

All I know is that the newer Catholic graves are at the section near the allotments near Hough End playing fields. And yeah it is vast, biggest in Europe I believe.

Is it bigger than Pere Lachaise in Paris (the one where Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde etc are buried)? Pere Lachaise has an awesome interactive map online so it’s not a problem there
Photo of Gretton’s grave

Hannett’s is “not far from Tony Wilson’s grave

No location clues on Wilson’s entry

All these details were added by a user with an email address tsamami_mommy@yahoo.com
so maybe email him for some clues? so maybe try and email him for more clues?

Hi, I saw those at findagrave but came to the conclusion that the guy who posted the pics just got them from elsewhere on the net and hadn't visited the cemetery at all. I hope someone here has already visited the graves and can give me some help but if not then maybe I'll be the first! Would like to have some knowledge up front though cos it's a 140 mile round trip and I don't fancy my chances in such a huge place! Regards Ken.

You, my friend, are a star! Got all the info I need (and didn't have to pay!) and my partner found a map of Southern Cemetery so we're off tomorrow, weather permitting. Thank you very very much for the link. Ken

It would be good if you could post the location information here to help anyone else who wants to pay their respects.

Caressing the marble and stone...... Went to the cemetery today and found all 3 no problems thanks to SBs link. To aid others, the graves are: Tony Wilson Plot B, Grave 118 Rob Gretton Plot G, Grave 278 Martin Hannett Plot FF, Grave 713 TBH the grave numbers are pretty meaningless because the majority aren't marked so was just a matter of going to the plot and wandering about. Martin Hannett was the hardest to find, he's about a third of the way into FF and half way across, next to a path between the graves. All 3 marked on the map. I can't say it was a 'fun' day but was nice to be there to show my respect for their individual genius. Wilson's headstone is so highly polished it was a bugger to photograph but you get the idea. He is, incidentally, about 15 yards from Lesley Ann Downey's grave (in plot A) so if you're particularly ghoulish or a Smiths fan you could go visit that too. Ken.
