Hi, I have just registered on this forum.

Forgive me if this topic has already been covered (but I've searched on here and can't find any discussions about it) - I was wondering if there is any background information knocking about, as to how the "studio multitrack" of LWTUA became available?

I've listened to it, and it's obviously genuine, but also, its obviously (a) incomplete (eg, the guitar that plays the "Then he kissed me" riff at the end is missing, also the rhythm guitar on the A-maj chord just before the "then he kissed me" playout, possibly part of the same track) and (b) it appears that many of the eight tracks are mixdowns of two or more raw recording tracks. Was this done by the bootlegger, or does it represent some weird kind of 8-track partial mixdown that was done back in 1980? (I can hardly imagine Martin Hannett thinking "this 24-track is too raw - I know, I'll bounce it down onto an 8 track 1/4" tape and then do the final mix from that"). ... Also, there are no count-ins (each track begins at the start of the song) and hardly any tape hiss to speak of (the vocal track goes completely silent where IC isn't singing), although there's a bit of bleed-through on the snare track. So, all in all, it's a bit of a puzzle, this one.

Anyway, it's nice to listen to. I had always wondered how come Hook's bass sounded so "full" on the record, almost like a guitar, very chunky and rich. It had never occurred to me that it was two different bass tracks mixed together. Plus it's nice to hear the song right to the end of the raw recording.

Sorry to waffle on - so, yeah, does anyone know how this "got out there", and have BS/PH/SM made any comments about it, etc?

My guess this is a stems only thing done around 94/95 for remixers to use.

When this was done: http://www.discogs.com/Joy-Division-Love-Will-Tear-Us-Apart/release/119756

I discussed this with fage quite a while back; he knew the answer but I can't remember what it was - and the thread seems to have vanished, blast it. Not very helpful, sorry!

No wonder I couldn't find the thing, it was a PM...anyway apparently it was done officially (though we don't know who by) from Martin Hannett's master tapes and ended up on some sort of 'Guitar Hero' game....and, naturally, very quickly found its way onto the net, around 2011 I think.

It was from 'Rock Band 3' rather than 'Guitar Hero' but I think they're pretty much the same game! It wasn't on the game disc but you have to download it separately - even though I do have the game on the Wii, I've never bothered to download it...

Thanks for the info, all. I'm surprised to hear how it "got out there", it wasn't what I was expecting.
Thinking about it in general terms though, I think that releasing multitrack recordings could be a very good way for bands to generate new income from their back catalogues, now that DAWs are available to anyone with a PC. It's just a great pity that J.D. won't be able to benefit from it much.

I, too, wish the band (and New Order) would make multitracks available. Hearing how the songs come together is utterly fascinating.

Does anyone have the full set of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" multitracks? Apparently there are eight:

01 - Bass
02 - Kick Drum
03 - Other
04 - Guitar & Bass 2
05 - Other Instruments
06 - Snare Drum
07 - Synths
08 - Vocals

I would absolutely love to hear them.

There's a thread on NewOrderOnline where the "Blue Monday" multitracks are posted and discussed. Check out http://forums.neworderonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=2752#post16787

The special effects in there are a surprise: Who realized the sound of thunder was included?

Fage, do you have the "LWTUA" multitracks posted online somewhere, or can you point me toward them? Thanks!

The "kick drum" track is not from the band, it's a sort of metronome added for players of the game.

It's interesting that the recording runs longer than the commercially released version - you can hear what happens after the fade.
