It is a bit confusing!

Basically they have broadcast this gig several times over the years and not always the same song selections.

An high quality DAT copy exists in trading circles of the 2001 broadcast which was missing 6 songs from the entire set.

Yesterdays broadcast featured 4 of the 6 songs missing from the 2001 broadcast.

This leaves Interzone only available on an audience tape and Warsaw only available from an earlier broadcast in lower quality

The confusing bit is that the presenter Bernard Lenoir has a tendency to talk over the songs from time to time, so I think Vince was trying to piece together an explanation of how to get the most complete version of the gig in the highest quality and with the least amount of an annoying French bloke jabbering away, mistakenly under the impression that the listener is more interested in what he has to say than they are hearing musical history being made...

Hi,

the last listing i made is a guide for the new remaster i will provide in a few days.

Only 1 song was broadcasted in 2001, 9 in 1994, and 12 in 2010.
2 other songs were broadcasted in the 80's (date still unknown). The 5 songs broadcasted live in 1979 were downgraded since the 1994 broadcast.

Here is a different listing, that will be more easy to understand (i'm not including the transition work) :

01 Passover
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : missing the first seconds
- 2001 broadcast : complete
- 2010 broadcast : first 2 seconds are mixed with the show background music

02 Wilderness
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 2010 broadcast : complete

03 Disorder
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : complete

04 LWTUA
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : complete
- 2010 broadcast : Bernard is speaking during the first 2 seconds of the song

05 Insight
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : Bernard is speaking during the first 5 seconds of the song
- 2010 broadcast : complete

06 Shadowplay
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : complete
- 2010 broadcast : complete

07 Transmission
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : complete
- 2010 broadcast : complete

08 Day Of The Lords
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : Bernard is speaking during the first 5 seconds of the song

09 Twenty Four Hours
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : complete
- 2010 broadcast : complete

10 Colony
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 2010 broadcast : Bernard is speaking during the first 5 seconds of the song

11 These Days
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : complete
- 2010 broadcast : complete

12 A Means To An End
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 1994 broadcast : complete
- 2010 broadcast : Bernard is speaking during the first 5 seconds of the song

13 She's Lost Control
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- 2010 broadcast : complete

14 Atrocity Exhibition
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete
- unknown 19xx broadcast : complete
- 2010 broadcast : complete

15 Interzone
- 2LP "Live In Paris" audience : complete

Your dedication is admirable Vince. What a pity they didn't broadcast DOTL or Interzone instead of LWTUA but given what we have that's being a bit pedantic!

Hi,

we have still two aces in our pocket :

- the so-called "1982 full broadcast" (anyone can contact Mark Johnson to check that for good ?)

- the unknown 19xx broadcast with "Atrocity Exhibition" and "Warsaw". Maybe it also included "Interzone" inbetween those two tracks ?

If we can find those recordings is very good sound quality, the gig would be finally complete (we really miss only one thing : the dead air before the encore tracks, no big deal but...).

See You

I'm just so happy to have 14, of the 16, songs in amazing condition! It was just a few months ago that we only had 9 songs; the official release! Then a well known blog gave us "Passover" at (9+), as far as SQ. We also got "Atrocity Exhibition" and "Warsaw" at very good sound quality (8+)! Now we have 14 songs at (9+), as far as sound quality; simply amazing! Even if we never get the other 2, I'm just so thankful to have what we now have; thank you so much Mr. Lenoir! What an amazing broadcast yesterday, I have listened to it at least 3 times so far! This is, in my opinion, one of the most important JD live recordings, simply because of the SQ and performance!

Vince thank you for all your hard work in this matter, well done mate! I'm looking forward to your mastering and your final version of the gig! Can't wait to hear it all pieced together! Thanks again!

Hi,

the recordings i'm waiting will arrive on Tuesday. Unfortunately France Inter is badly broadcasted in Versailles (i have to ask friends to record PJ Harvey in 2001 too).

Vince,

What exactly are you waiting on? Did the copies that you recorded from the broadcast sound flat? I noticed that the one I have, that was recorded straight from the radio station link to the broadcast sound flat in comparison to the 1994 broadcast! So does your friend have recordings from the broadcast, a few days ago, that are much fuller, like the 1994 broadcast!

I would of thought the broadcast would of sounded the same regardless? Just guessing! Can't wait to hear everything pieced together; it's going to be brilliant and well worth the wait!

I recorded the stream direct from the internet (not the listen again stream) so I can post up a sample of a FLAC if anyone wants to compare?

My ears are shot from years of musical abuse so I can't really be the judge of what sounds good.

Hi,

like for the U2 Sheffield 2009 radioshow, i'm waiting the BEST version of the France Inter broadcast... I'm feed up with people providing shitty recordings over and over, and all the "digital internet / satellite broadcasts" are lossy = mp3 = shit.
And i'm not speaking of the "streamed version", which is just a joke.

So the hard work is to find/provide a REAL FM capture that is lossless.
Over the 10 people i asked to record the show, half did a crappy recording, and the other half sended the recording at the end of last week.
Don't forget that in France we were on holidays from Friday 21 to Tuesday 25 so the post service didn't work.

I already have a DAT master from the FM broadcast, and i'm waiting another one in the next days...

See You

Vince

Hi Vince - are you doing proper spectral analysis of all the recordings you are collecting or are you just using your ears?

I understand what you are saying about the FM recordings not being lossy but in the UK FM Radio is quite heavily compressed and generally  cuts off at 15khz. On top of that FM is much more susceptible to interference and distortion.

On top of that I guess we don't know the technology or digital audio format used by France Inter to distribute their audio signals to the FM transmitter - nor do we know the quality or format of the media on which France Inter have archived the concert

Wouldn't it be simpler to simply ask someone at France Inter to provide a CD copy of the full concert and soundcheck without the comments inbetween tracks? (just like what's happened with the dutch radio station)

HMC, you are very correct, it would be much simpler, but it will probably never happen! Their is an official release for the Les Bains Concert, but what is found on that release was recorded directly off the airwaves, from the 1994 broadcast, so even for the official release the radio station didn't provide a copy of their master! Granted, I'm not sure if they were ever approached and I think nobody wanted to shell out the duckets to secure the rights to use a copy of their master; come to think of it not sure if they have a master, just back-up tapes! So I don't think they would give one to us fans, but it would be amazing if someone was able to get one! I'm not sure if the soundcheck was recorded that night, by anyone!

Hi,

in my letter i clearly wrote that it would be great to have an official release of the full concert. Also i said that some fans are in contact with the band / management, and that if Bernard (Lenoir) wants to meet them, it can be possible.
I think that it only depends on someone at Warner France or Warner UK. If someone knows a manager that can contact Bernard, it would be great !

But to be honest, the fact that no one did that SIMPLE THING means that Warner don't care about that... I'm sure that Bernard is 100% for an official release !
I'm pretty sure that the complete gig can sell more than 1000 copies worldwide... Probably between 1000 and 3000.

A small picture of Bernard, with the name of his favorite band !

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3190/2770733699_158a510aa4.jpg

Anyone can identify the tape ? A pressing of "Unknown Pleasures" or "Closer" ?

Okay i'm still waiting some FM captures, the post office was on strike today, and last week we had a very long week-end... So this is not helping.

I reworked three versions, using a lossy digital satellite broadcast :

- the 2010 broadcast
- the complete gig (now updated) : total time 63.03 (probably due to speed problems of some audience tracks that were upgraded with the recent radiobroadcast)
- an edited version with the 7 unreleased tracks of the gig (without the 9 tracks of the 1994 broadcast that are on the shitty-ugly-puking NMC "so-called" official release).

As i said i'm still waiting a real DAT capture of the FM broadcast to check if it is better. I will check that twice : to see if the sound is better, and i will check if it is lossless.
Of course if the digital satellite broadcast is better, i will use it.
To be honest, the digital satellite recording i had was pretty average... I'm fearing the worse for the "real" FM broadcasts...

If anyone can put on Megaupload the 2010 broadcasted version (56m) and the 7 tracks edited version (27m), i can send him a DVDR with the files.

Please keep in mind : NO DIRECT DOWLOAD LINK on the board.

See You

Vince

If I had to guess, I would say the tape in question is his copy of the Les Bains Douches gig! The master was damaged and back up tapes have been used, and Bernard (Lenoir) has personal copies of that gig; probably in the form of a tape? Just a guess, but doubt it's a copy of "Closer" or "Unknown Pleasures".

Hi,

the gig is owned by France Inter, who had the contract to record and broadcast the performance. The gig was professionally taped, and professionally archived. This is why France Inter can broadcast it without any problem (this is the same story as for the Europe 1 broadcast of Led Zeppelin 1969 parisian gig). Even if the original reels (?) are damaged, at least since 1994 the whole gig was archived on a professional CDR, and even probably on DAT.

I'm also working on a project where the owners of the shitty NMC release will only have to rip their original CD and insert the missing tracks. I will have to borrow the CD tomorrow (no way i can have bought that one back in 2001 !).

See You

I disagree with the NMC Les Bains release being shitty! I think it's an amazing release, as far as the Paris tracks! Regardless, the sound-quality is better then any other JD live recording! The two runner ups are "Preston" and now, a copy of the master reel, of the Paradiso gig!

Regardless of what little problems are present with the Les Bains Douches official release, it's still at the top of a very short list of recording that rank a 9- or higher!

This just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less!

The NMC release sounds good, to my ears, but I have no other version of the Paris gig to compare it with, I'm waiting with bated breath for this new more complete version to become available!  I do think it's totally baffling that they weren't able to sort out getting a complete version from the radio station's tape for the commercial release though.
