I was reading Bernard's book Chapter and Verse and he mentions 2 shows that I believe are not listed on the concerts page: http://www.joydiv.org/concerts.htm  and that I didn't find any discussion of here.

He mentions that on the same night (it seems he's talking about late 1977 or 1978) they played 2 gigs, the first one a talent show in Walkden that didn't turn out so well for them and then after that they headed to the Ranch Bar in Manchester and played an unscheduled gig.

Anyone know anything about these? I don't imagine there were many Warsaw/Joy Division fans at either show, so no surprise the gigs are not listed.

It's in Chapter 6 - Awaking. In the digital version I have it's on pages 69-70, about 3/4 of the way through the chapter:

"One gig was in a place called Walkden and turned out to be some kind of talent night at a social club for old biddies. Basically, it was a procession of cheesy cabaret singers in dress shirts and massive bow ties... and then us. Following a load of fellas in purple velvet tuxes singing ‘My Way’ with Ian in his Jim Morrison leather trousers fronting this punk band, you can imagine the reaction. Every time Ian jumped in the air or did anything at all, the whole audience would scream, and I don’t think it was lust. We got in the car afterwards, and everyone was moaning at Ian and he was saying, ‘Fucking hell, I had no idea it was going to be like that.’ We drove straight to the Ranch Club, one of our regular Manchester hangouts, opened the boot, took the gear out and did an impromptu gig there and then. And it was a storming gig, maybe because we were all so pissed off."
