...and I've seen a lot. Must be a late photo.

Sumner is playing Hook's Yamaha BB1200 Bass, while Hook is playing his six string Marathon Shergold bass???
Besides the LWTUA-video that was shot only weeks before Ian commited suicide, I can't remember any picture of Joy Division where Hook played the Yamaha or the Shergold 6-string. On most of the pictures it's still Hook's cheap Rickenbacker copy. And now here is a pic with both basses played by Sumner and Hook?
IIRC "Passover" on Closer was the first song where Hook played his six string bass. And I'm pretty sure he used the Yamaha all over Closer. But Closer was recorded mid to late march 1980. So JD didn't play many concerts after the recording of Closer.

What song might this be? I know that on Sound Of Music and Atrocity Exhibition Hook switched instruments, but a JD song with 2 basses?
What concert might this be?
Could this be the gig that was published on Still (Birmingham University)? I know that Hook played his Yamaha because of the sound of his bass.
Could this be "Ceremony" or "Passover"?
I never thought much about the instruments used on the "Ceremony"-version on Still. I was too occupied with Ian's voice not being recorded.
But now that I think of it: I'm pretty sure the guitar parts that were played on a guitar when New Order recorded the song are played on a six-string bass on the live-version that is on "Still".
It kind of disturbed me that the "guitar" sounded so "low". Now it makes sense.
I'm a bassplayer myself and besides ordinary 4-string basses I play the kind of rather rare six-string basses Hook plays.
It's tuned like a guitar but one octave lower and the string spacing equals the string spacing on a guitar.
It's not the kind of six-string bass Fusion players and other retarded virtuos players [biggrin] that have nothing to say are playing.

P.S. some other member posted the Basement pics of JD from the same blog. I've spent hours watching the other pictures on the blog. Fantastic!!!!

The photo is from one of the Moonlight Club gigs in early April 1980, and "Blurt" in the background would indicate it's probably the second night (the 3rd).

Hooky is playing the Masquerader, you can see the white pickup surrounds and the bridge/tremelo.

'Atrocity Exhibition' from 3 April 1980...the picture is also available in colour. Hooky always seemed to play the Masquerader on the songs he played guitar - I don't think I've ever seen a picture of him playing the SG.

Mea Culpa. People always said I'm to occupied with basses. Now it all makes sense to me...
The head of the Masquerader just looks so similar to Hook's Marathon six-string bass.

But just to offer an easy way out of this mess to me: couldn't I be right about the live version of Ceremony? Maybe not. The instruments just sound so "direct" and dry without any room on the live-sides of Still because they were board-recordings...
Truth just gave me the rest with his boring white pickup remark.

Ashamed of the person I am,
Dirk

Nah, can't be Atrocity Exhibition. Ian and his clothes still look dry. Toward the end of the gig he'd have to look all soaked and wet haired. And the guys at the back look as if they still have to make their mind up about the band.

Atrocity Exhibition is the only song from 3 April where Barney played bass and Hooky played guitar.

I see it was a very short set and that song was only the 7th on the list (instead of being the last one of a longer set). Maybe indeed too early for looking sweaty perhaps?

Unless it's Sound of Music, the opener from 2nd April set? Admittedly the Blurt logo would suggest it was the 3rd instead, in which case it would be Atrocity.

On the photos attributed to 2 April, Barney wore a green shirt, Ian a red shirt and the Blurt logo wasn't there on that day...I'd suggest that the Blurt logo is the clincher for 3 April.

One of the buttons on Ian's shirt is not in place. Maybe due to wild dance movements? Then that would be more likely to occur during the show and not right at the beginning of it (Atrocity vs SoM).
