Quick question on the Peel sessions: Does anyone have both the ‘The Complete BBC Recordings’ CD from 2000 and the 2008 Best Of which has BBC as a bonus disc?

Just asking because I’m curious if the 2008 bonus disc is different in terms of sound quality, ie is it overly compressed / brickwalled etc, compared to the 2000 release? I also ask because for some unknown reason iTunes will not import my 2008 BBC disc. Disc is as new, not scratched, it just won’t import. The CD itself plays fine but it’s really bugging me not having the BBC disc on my iPod as I listen to JD out and about quite a bit, not just at home. Looks like I’ll need to pick up the 2000 disc.

An odd compilation really that 2008 Best Of, really strange including Incubation, seems totally out of place. Also it comes in one of those weird SACD jewel cases that never really took off. Oh and the print is blurry in the booklet thus hard to read. A duff disc and shoddy booklet. Bit of a poor release really. Any input appreciated.

I can only recommend uk cd first pressings,be it albums, comps and peel sessions...which aren't hard to get,if you know where to look.if you need links, hit me up.the jap.releases are prefered by most but are too pricey....

Thanks. I’ll probably pick up the standalone Complete BBC CD. For some reason I passed on my original albums when I picked up the 2007 remasters. I had the H&S box set anyway so at the time it seemed silly to have 3 versions of the same albums. Now all I read from people who’ve compared them is that the older pressings are better.

From memory, I had the Centredate early 90s CD issues. Am I right in thinking that these are the same masterings as the original Factory CDs? A quick peruse on another site indicates that the Japanese (as you said) albums sound best, followed by US Qwest, then the Centredate / FACDs. So I’m not sure where the H&S versions of the albums fit into all this. Am looking into getting originals again. Thoughts?

the '86 nimbus pressings with replicating artwork are the best cds, funny thing is "still" ,which most say the canadian pressing from '87(?) is best,as the uk version was released '90.i posted a link to the steve hoffmann forum where it is discussed in detail and gives most insight (eh?[wink],no pun).

Thanks. That was the thread I read the other day. My brain was fried after reading page after page of that. I am on there as Pop_Zeus. Been posting about JD quite a bit on there. Despite me using JD Central for reference for years, I only noticed this week that it has its own forum!

Yes, used the site quite a bit to find rarities. Just had my first bad experience though. Ordered a box set on Sunday, a day later I get a message from site support saying the seller’s account’s been suspended and to get a refund via PayPal. I’ve opened a case with them, seller not responded to it. I’ve emailed the seller direct, he hasn’t replied. Apparently I can’t escalate it to PayPal until after Sunday. In the meantime he has my £30 and doesn’t seem to be on Discogs anymore.

Paypal should refund,at least that was my experience.....which boxset did you get?the tacky '97 or the more sturdy 2008 box?

Not JD related (I have the pozzoli short box H&S already), it was a set of the early Guided by Voices albums. PayPal are not that helpful. It seems like a lot of jumping through hoops to get your money back. It says that to escalate an already open dispute, you should click on a sellers message from within the dispute. Obviously as he is yet to respond, there isn’t one, so how can I click on something that doesn’t exist? I emailed PayPal through their message centre and just got a long winded copied & pasted generic response. I believe that after Sunday (when a week has passed since the order) I can escalate it regardless of whether he has responded by then or not. I will try my utmost to get the money back off this scumbag though.

Okay, seems you got the shitty end of things,i never had that to that extent...crikey,fingers crossed that it reconciles.
Most say the pozzoli box-set is higher end as it does not unglue itself.sound should be the same...[wink]

Original FACD of Substance arrived today and got same of Closer on the way from eBay. Cool to have pre-loudness wars versions again. Missed out on original UP at weekend, will keep an eye out for that and Still first CD pressing too.

Meanwhile I managed to escalate my Discogs case to PayPal. Unfortunately they give the rip off seller 10 days to respond before they do anything. I’ve already been trying to resolve it for a week with no response from him.

Dave_79 , I have had several experiences like yours on Discogs ,and I have always had the whole Amounts returned.
However with PayPal like many of us have found out
They take your money quick but takes Ages to Pay it back !!

Yes please. The eBay one went for £11.50, on Discogs they seem to be nearer £20. Strangely, the Factory Closer seems both cheaper and easier to come by. Don’t know why. Will look out for Canadian Still, thanks

My original FACD XXV of Closer arrived. The textured sleeve is brill, the artwork looks amazing, I had forgotten how yellow the 90s CD sleeves were. Truly awful! Oh and it sounds great too

Update from earlier in thread re: Discogs conman. . . PayPal emailed me earlier to say the claim has been decided in my favour (on account of the useless seller not even bothering to respond) and I'll receive a refund. Now they tell me it will take up to 30 days for them to actually give me the money back!

Back on topic, I got my CD of Complete BBC Recordings now, and have managed to import it into iTunes, so am happy
