Played this in the car on the way to work today and it raised a few questions which some of you may (or may not) care to answer:
1. What is that pulsing metallic like noise that you can hear through most of Eternal. Is it IC's guitar and if so how is he doing it?
2. Is a drum machine employed on the same song?
3. Is the synth bass on Heart and Soul played manually or via some sequencer\ trigger?
4. Is Rob Gretton saying "Turn your amps up" through a mic on the stage?
5. Why does he ask Hooky to "come to his mic"
All fairly trivial I know but it helped while away the journey.

Think I can answer some of these: 1. It's Ian's guitar, he used one of the organ effects on his Vox Phantom VI 2. Yes, the shimmering sound is from a drum machine 3. Manual I think, as on the following night at the Lyceum it changes slightly at times 4. Not sure it is Rob, has this been confirmed? 5. Presumably Hooky was trying to say something but it couldn't be picked up by the mic Have you heard the audience recording of this gig? Slightly different to the soundboard/released version.

Since when has the audience tape circulated?

Thanks TJ. Thought the shimmering noise was the guitar? I was thinking more about the bass drum sound and wondering whether that was a drum machine.
Don't think I've heard an audience recording either. I have a tape somewhere in shocking quality but pretty sure it's just a bad copy of the soundboard.
Good point about Gretton. Could be a roadie?

"1. What is that pulsing metallic like noise that you can hear through most of Eternal. Is it IC's guitar and if so how is he doing it? It's Ian's guitar, he used one of the organ effects on his Vox Phantom VI" Surely the pulsing metallic noises are too rhythmic to have come from the guitar ? I always believed it to be the one of the filter's / oscillators on the Transendent 2000 synth being triggered .... ala the similar effect (bursts of pulses) used on 'Isolation' alongside the main keyboard riff ..... as the main strings sound on 'The Eternal' came from the Arp Omni. And yes pretty sure that is Rob Grettons voice

You can make some pretty effected sounds with a Phantom VI Special:

Agreed Truth .... but IMO it still sounds like typical guitar effects providing a typical guitar + FX sound (albeit in that wirey, tinny Vox phantom way) .... so im personally not 100% convinced (but still open minded). Interestingly, there is a good interview with Steve Morris ...who is probably more reliable memory wise / techy wise than Hooky and Barney ... on The Electricity Club website : http://www.electricity-club.co.uk/html/int_morris.html "We had Martin's ARP2600 and the sequencer that goes with it on The Eternal, there's a f*** up in the middle of it and you couldn't drop in so we left it and it sounds like I've done it but was a machine! And there was our CR78 nightmare... have you ever tried programming one? Me and Martin, we were very keen on smoking pot and we hired one in for Decades" By the way, good clip of the Arp Omni II here ... featuring a demo of the bassline from 'Heart & Soul' and the keyboard parts to 'Decades'http://www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-electronic-music-production/729826-joy-division-synths.html

No, it was somebody from the club, if my memory serves me correctly. Philip

I can merely quote what I wrote elsewhere on this forum :"I was taken by a friend of a friend to the "legendary" Preston gig immortalised on CD. Staying at a college friends house in Preston for a few days, aformentioned mate turned up with a ticket for John and the promise of a good night out, went away to the nearest phone box (ahh, pre-mobile days) and got me one too. If I known who I was going to see then with my tastes at the time I wouldn't have bothered going, but was swept away to the gig on a kind of musical blind date. I was astounded at what I saw. From my spot I could only really see Ian & Stephen, but it was enough. Didn't know any songs they played, but was blown away. Of course, listening back to the CD it all sounds a bit of a loose night to say the least, but I really connected with them, and all these years later I still play the music a lot, and occasionally make people jealous by pointing out the fact that I saw the band, even though it was a total accident.............." and add that the gig seemed quite disorganised at times, that Section 25 did absolutely nothing for me (almost went home during their set, but was persuaded to stay) and that the whole night was a revelation to me. Cheers Philip. Funny how after all these years listening to various gig recordings they still conjure up the same images for me - doubtless nothing like what happened in reality!

Just to clarify some confusion about Vox guitars:
The Vox Phantom Special VI guitar used by Ian Curtis is not the same thing as the Vox Guitar Organ. The Phantom Special was a regular Vox Phantom with battery powered effects built into it such as tremolo, delay, fuzz, treble boost etc. There is no organ effect. The Guitar Organ is essentially a Vox Phantom with Continental Organ electronics built into it. It has an aluminium neck and organ note triggers wired into the frets so that when the string makes contact with the fret it produces an organ tone the same pitch as you would get on a standard tuned guitar. They are the same shape but entirely different beasts. Joy Division never used one of these. I'm fairly certain that that rhythmic "Pulsating" effect is IC's guitar with the tremolo effect switched on.

Sometimes after that I can hear who I presume is one of JD member or stage crew ask "What's she on about?!"
