I thought I saw this somewhere but now I can't find it. Is there a section here about the rehearsals that we know of or is there a complete list somewhere? Thanks for your help, love this place.

Top listing fage - info in there new to me! Am I completely mistaken or didn't Hooky say the 'Western Works' rehearsals were actually at Graveyard Studios? And someone else told me that session was recorded at TJ Davidson's too. Or am I going senile (quite a possibility, the wife says) and getting the tape confused with the May 1980 'IALP' rehearsal?

May 1980 'IALP' rehearsal applies to 'Western Works' too.
I thinks all 'Western Works' rehearsals recorded in TJ Davidson..and probably reworked Graveyard Studios. But I can mistaken. Where mr. Darkman when we need him? [biggrin]

I'm not sure why Western Works is mentioned? WW is Cabaret Voltaire's studio in Sheffield... New Order recorded there in September '80.

Also, are any of the dates confirmed, or are they pure speculation? If so, isn't it a better idea to list the dates as tentative, as they may be taken for a fact otherwise (and will spread like wildfire)?

Yeah, It's all just a guess.
I really don't know, I just used this forum to get information.

Well, I just fixed my post.

Well, we're all groping around in the dark as far as this goes...Jesus H Christ, three decades ago, if we weren't on the spot then who can confirm? I know that better than most. Speculation is by definition vague at best, but the timescale makes fage's guesswork more than worthwhile at this point in the Joy Division story. There's more to follow, I'm sure.

Thanks fage for clearing that up. Having said that, I think the dates are about right. But still not confirmed, of course.

Re: TJ Davidson's.. I'm sure I read somewhere that JD didn't use this by March/April '80.. they'd moved to the Rialto in Salford by then? The filming of the LWTUA vid was supposedly only a temporary return, as that was a good space to film in?

Yes, they moved to the Rialto (or Pinky's as it was apparently called when it was a rehearsal space) in the latter month or so.

Also, I think that any rehearsal recordings are unlikely to have taken place at Graveyard (since it was an actual studio rather than a rehearsal space). I know Hooky says that Ceremony was done there, but I'm unsure, it still sounds like a mic in the room kind of recording.

Which does make me wonder, since Hooky is so sure they did Ceremony there......?

Marko, I think that a page detailing known rehearsal recordings would be a handy feature for the site.

Yes, we haven't had one up to now because there was hardly any information.

It would be good if we could have a volunteer to own the page - i.e. notify us of any updates so it's always up to date. Fage?

In the meantime if anyone has info that should be included please post it here

Cheers

Marko

A splendid idea, truth Marko...would be a groove to have someone fill in the blanks as far as rehearsals go. fage seems to know his stuff, likewise CPL and his chums who shared TJD with Joy Division. Bet there're others around too.... This could turn out to be real can of worms. I hope so.

I'll glad to help in filling the site..but how?

What I know:
Tentatively Aug/Sep 77 rehearsal recorded in unknown rehearsal room.
Tentatively Oct/Nov 77, Jan 78 & Nov/Dec 79 rehearsals recorded in TJ Davidson on reel-to-reel tape (probably).
Tentatively Mar 79 rehearsal recorded in TJ Davidson on compact cassete (probably).
And spring 80 rehearsals recorded in Pinky's rehearsal room on reel-to-reel tape.

It's all unconfirmed, however.

Probably mostly JD's rehearsals recorded on reel-to-reel recorder. You can find it on some photos which Cummins shoot in TJD.

Would it be possible to have a wiki page on this subject and integrate it into the site?

Just a thought, but there **might** be some details/ dates lurking among the notes in that splendid book of Rob Gretton's notebooks, One Top Class Manager...

A "rehearsal" page added to the site WOULD be very helpful.

Some people say that the August/September 1977 rehearsals actually occurred on the same day as the Rock Garden, Middlesborough (September 14, 1977) gig at the same club before they performed live.

Regarding the January 1978 rehearsals, I think we can DEFINITELY say they were recorded in T.J. Davidson's. If you'll watch the Joy Division documentary, I certainly get that impression. The October/November 1977 rehearsals were also recorded this way, probably. Is there an exact date as to when Joy Division started renting that rehearsal space, anyway? Was it literally the first thing they did in 1976, or did it take them a few months before they did? Didn't they first rehearse at Stephen's house, or something? I remember in Peter's book how much they ogled it because he was rich.

I thought Bedge said the March 1979 rehearsals were recorded a club commonly used for a rehearsal space, as opposed to T.J. Davidson's? I haven't read the forum in forever, but I could've sworn he either said it was recorded it at either Eric's or Band on the Wall.

The Spring 1980 rehearsals are super tentative, dating-wise. I've heard some say the first take of "Misplaced" was recorded during a rehearsal at Britannica Row, where the Closer sessions took place. And then one source says the final take of "In a Lonely Place" was the last song Ian performed and was as late as May 14, 1980.

Hey guys, a page for this would be a great idea if some one has the time. Here are some more questions.

1. Is the Malcolm Whitehead Joy Division film the best place to hear the 23 March 1979 Rob Gretton interview or is it easier to understand or longer on a bootleg?

2. There is a small bit at the beginning of "here are the young men". Is this a rehearsal or a sound check or what?

3. Where can we get the "No Love Lost" from the "Bedge tape". Is it on a specific bootleg?

Thanks everyone.

I can answer 2 and 3.

2. It's a soundcheck. Peter Hook plays the bassline to "From Safety to Where...?" and Ian plays with a vocalizer.

3. I am working on getting "No Love Lost" out to the public as we speak. It was shared in full by Bedge a long time ago, so it has ALWAYS been out there, and I don't think many people would have a problem with its sharing right now, given how we're all finally congregating to talk about the rehearsals. Just give me some time. With any luck, it should be available today.

That is great, thank you. Just a quick clarification about the sound check. Do we know what show it is?

It's either one of the two Apollo shows (October 27-28, 1979). I never learned which one.

Judging by Ian's clothes - which correspond to those he wore at the actual gig - I'd venture the soundcheck is from 27th October. Though as always I'm open to correction/ridicule. One may also note Hooky had the same gear on for both shows, the sweaty herbert.
