Hi there!

Some of you know that I did some audio and video reworking of Joy Division. It all was not as good as professional works (hello Analog Loyalist) because the level of my skill is quite low and I have problems with sources. All JD collectors have problems with sources, I think. Some of the better versions of recordings are guarded as if they were not concert tapes or just videos but state secrets!

The idea to rework the "Love Will Tear Us Apart" video came to me in August 2013, when the channel "Joy Division" first came onto YouTube. Initially, I was shocked by how badly Rhino hadhandled the video. Seriously, it looks like they only had a VHS of HATYM just uploaded it onto YouTube without any reworking, you know. Just look at this:

What could they do?
As we know (correct me if I'm wrong), the clip was shot on 16mm film. In today's "digital" format, it's resolution exceeds the 2K video format (yep, it's actually slightly better than Full HD). For comparison: VHS is equivalent to about half of a DVD (360i instead of 576i). So, if they could scan it frame-by-frame in the 'restoring' liquid, they could have achieved incredible results! Take a look at this restored film:

[FLmDt-oP7_g]

And that's only 8mm! Just imagine what the 16mm would look like.

What did I do?
Not so much, to be honest. If in 2013 I thought that the problem was an imperfect software, I now realize that the problem is in the source. All official releases are poor. When I got, in my opinion, the best DVD source (2009, "Rage: In Love"), I realized that I couldn't improve the quality too much, but I could try to fix the colors. So I focused on this; I tried to add more details to it. I worked on audio too, of course, trying to synchronize audio with video.

I planned to post it on the 28th of April or, maybe, on the 18th of May, but couldn't wait that long.

Let me introduce ...
Color-corrected, upscaled to Full HD, coming from the best possible DVD source, the most famous song of Joy Division - "Love Will Tear Us Apart."
Enjoy!

Note: I could not upload the video onto YouTube, because it violates their copyright rules, so I used another video hosting site. I hope that you will not have any problems with this.

P.S. Link to a .mkv file is in my blog

Nice work.

Just occurred to me that given the various different close ups etc during this, did they have to perform the song quite a few times and if so were there ever different audio takes in existence?

I doubt that they played the song perfectly by the first time. So I think that unsuccessful attempts of audio and video may exist.
However, this is just guesswork....... How we know JD played very well at their gigs and I think this case was no exception, for sure.

But I have a some another questions...

Only one camera were used? Who owns the master-film?

We know who was the director? Perhaps this is Corbijn's debut work? [biggrin]
He took photos throughout the shooting. I even saw one colored shot. Why him, not Cummins?

Why did they return to TJ Davidson for filming?
And what the hell are some of the frames are red? [biggrin]

So many questions arose in my mind during this work. I hope someone can sheds any light

Yes nice work Fage.  I was looking to expect the telltale signs on the original vid of when the live track and the record go out of sync and back again - the first shot of Barney playing the keyboard riff - the bit where Hooky's strumming is forced back into place - the shot from distance where Ian is jerked sideways - you've ironed all of these out and it looks like a professional video at last!

It really is a massive improvement - you should be proud!

Joy Division made the decision among themselves to return to TJ Davidson. They thought it was an appropriate location to sum up their work up to that point, as well as the fact they wrote most of their songs there. I believe some of the shots are red because somebody fucked up processing the negatives or something...can't remember the exact story.

Fage, that really is excellent work!  The improvements in the colours, and the sync is stunning compared to the Rhino issue of this.

You are very modest however, you really should be proud of your work on this.

If you ever get bored, you could always tackle the HATYM tracks!

Great work! It's a shame that the record companies don't care about the quality of the videos. I remember ARTE showed some Joy Division videos and Atmosphere looked like a 20 years old VHS tape, even the Audio was horrible.

Great work, Fage. The resolution and colour is far superior to the official Youtube video.
...And I agree with your technical points: Assuming that the original camera negatives, or interpositive, or even first generation prints of this film still exist (and that the camera was in focus etc), then the source material can be rendered in full 1080 HD quality. Question is of course, DO the negs/interpos still exist, who owns them, etc. (OK, that's 2 questions!)

Congratulations! Such an improvement in resolution and syncing. I never noticed the cat in the window, which gives the derelict space a more lived-in feel.

As always, a superb remaster from the Joy Division whizz himself, FageOner. Who knows, maybe one day we'll be able to get our hands on the Plan K footage or any other footage out there.

Isn't it on You Tube somewhere? It was broadcast once on UK TV.

Very cool, not seen this for years.

A little about that room, if anyone is really interested.

Emergency, later Foreign Press, orginally had the room, we swapped with the lads, mainly because of the rent but also due to the size of our PA, back-breaking stuff at 3am, shifting it all upstairs, which were narrow and steep, with numerous missing tiles on the short, sharp cornered landings.

The room was on the very top floor - on the left as you look at the building, the building itself was built for the manufacture of ships ropes, so on the right of the stairwell the rooms were very long to cater for the great lengths of rope, to the left, not so.

There was no heating and so we used little two bar electric heaters to defrost our frozen digits, it really was bloody cold throughout the building. Both ourselves and later JD set up near the door, leaving a vast empty area beyond, in this film you witness the lads playing down at the end, an area which would never have been used (except for pissing into the occasional lemonade bottle) I smoked back then, as did pretty much everyone else, and for a while smoked Embassy (three 5's) State Express cigs, in one JD photo I'd seen of the room, I was amused to see one of my empty packets on the floor having shared them out. Myself and Ian once shared a packet of 'More'  but alas no photographic evidence excists haha .. but I digress. The room was always a busy place, we often nipped up for a chat and to share any gossip, the lads for Barrett's were often in attendance, collecting / dropping loaned gear or just repairing gear.

The last time I can recall JD using the room was during the Buzzcocks tour, did they come back after this? I'm not quite sure when they moved out. I do remember helping them load up a rather nifty Merc van kitted out with Aircraft seats behind the main driver / passenger seats for the band, Ian ofcourse managed to avoid any manual labour, there's no truth in the rumour he once broke a sweat carrying his mic down those stairs .
