So This is Permanence: - our review

[permanence]

This is a big 274 page 28 x 21cm hardback which is big on content. We'd hoped this would be packed with unpublished images of Ian's notebooks and we're not disappointed.

Focussing on his lyrics there's an initial section with the finished songs featuring the handwritten version on one page and the typed up version opposite. This is followed by a large section with handwritten lyrics to unfinished songs, early versions and other prose. Finally there's a section with other items from Ian's archive - book covers, letters from fans, pages from fanzines etc.

This is clearly a labour of love and Jon Savage explains in the intro how they selected the images for the book - generally the most complete version in Ian's notebooks.

"His lyrics tell much more than a conversation with him ever could" - Deborah Curtis

Highly recommended

It's lovely, but not sure about the sticker on the back - looks a bit of an afterthought to me - Peter S would be horrified.

Otherwise it looks just like Still - beautiful

Like the Rob Gretton notebooks this is a book to ponder over. Seeing Ian's lyrics amended in his own hand gives a real insight into the working and reworking that went into creating the final prose ... and sometimes the crossed out earlier idea can change your perception of what the final version of a song was all about.

I think we'll be discussing this for some time on this forum...

I have one question. Is the early draft of "Komakino" in there?

So The Book is here. It's larger than I expected. There is plenty of white margin space in which to write your own notes. I'm not sure gray is the best color for a cover. Since I have the USA version it may be slightly different-rather than "Jon" Savage, the artsy "J" has been transformed into "Ion" Savage.

I'm quite tempted to rip out Ian's writings and put them in a plastic bag. ;-)

I could have lived without all the book covers.

The fan letters are interesting.

There are no lyrics for "Ceremony"-apparently they were never written down, so your guess on them is as good as mine. :-)

Page 197 has the title "Komakino" .....ON EDIT: various "Komakino" lines appear here and there throughout. There is of course the final version too.

ON EDIT: I see Jon Savage knows that it's not plagiarism to borrow from what you yourself already wrote lol.

It's a kind of hommage to the limited deluxe version of Still published in 1981.

I wrote my comment on the other thread about this book. IMHO the content of the book doesn't keep up to the standard of the cover and artwork of the book. But otherwise it's a nice object.
The pictures aren't that great but the original deluxe version of Still had a textile cover, too. And the colour was exactly the same. Just the ordinary version had a paper cover (but a very nice one too made from heavy cardboard. I still regret that I didn't buy the textile version back then.

Ah! I had no idea. Thanks for pointing it out! Makes more sense now...

I debated what to do with the back cover removable sticker. I considered getting artsy with it-cutting it up and randomly sticking the pieces up around town. Finally I just threw it away lol.

More on the book-it's easy to get lost for hours contemplating -- or "deciphering scars"- this that the other of Ian's writing. Especially the "unofficial" versions. Currently stuck on "Was the myth such a lie" which is hella different from "The myths and the lies." I do highly recommend buying this book as it truly does shed a lot of new light on JD's lyrical content.

Once upon a time there was a band that was as independant and punk in their release-politics as punk and independant goes...
No singles from LP's. Wonderfull artwork that those who bought the records didn't have to pay. They did cut their profits in order to give us those wonderfull objects - from UP to the deluxe-edition of Still to the cover of Blue Monday.

I still don't know if Ian is rolling around in his grave or just smiling cynically about once upon a time being a member of a group that might have become one of the most repackaged resold item in the history of popular music. Autographs? What a f*cking idiotic BOF idea! That's like people who buy worn underwear instead of having a real relationship with another human being or the things an artist produced. Not to get me wrong: if it is the only thing to make you happy, go for it! Sexual fetishists are o.k for me somehow...

But to change to a less interesting part of the human species: what's wrong with people who buy these 500,- Euro items with some autographs instead of buying the already overpriced original? I hope it makes them happy. If I think about it again, the comparison with used underwear might have something going for it...

I finished the book about a week ago. It was hard to do because I percieved a sense of a great sadness and frustration arising from the ending pages . And anger-a righteous sort of anger that"burns from inside." I'm sure what's in this book is not everything Ian ever wrote but it is what's been found and bound into a kind of permance indeed-for right, for wrong, for short or long, it stands on its own as a testament, calling to my mind words of another poet (Theodore Rothke):
" Open House

My secrets cry aloud.
I have no need for tongue.
My heart keeps open house,
My doors are widely swung.
An epic of the eyes
My love, with no disguise.
My truths are all foreknown,
This anguish self-revealed.
I’m naked to the bone,
With nakedness my shield.
Myself is what I wear:
I keep the spirit spare.
The anger will endure,
The deed will speak the truth
In language strict and pure.
I stop the lying mouth:
Rage warps my clearest cry
To witless agony."

Wow, what a cnut.  I bought one of these (the edition of 20 lyric sheet print that is - not the book-cum-lyric print deluxe package) and it was a lot less than 250 quid!

And to ravachol/Dirk - yes I am a sad old twat who can't have a relationship with another human being so I bought some autographs instead [wink]

(Just for the record, other than ones I've gotten personally - I've never bought an autograph in me life before.)

You're forgiven. But a "hate" t-shirt would have been cheaper and might still be a better way to find other wonderfull lost, sad, isolated, desperate and kind human beings, who are fun to be with than investing into autographs...

After a quick browse, this all i could find on worthpoint.com:
http://Curtis.Signed, slipcased limited edition of 200, of which this is number 152. Book is signed by the surviving members of Joy Division (Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris), Ian Curtis' widow Deborah, and the editor Jon Savage. It also includes a print of the handwritten lyrics to She's Lost Control, signed by the same people. This copy has been opened to check and photograph, but is otherwise untouched. This beautifully produced book sold out pre-release, and the signed print has been made available on its own at £125! Payment by Paypal only, thank you.
