I Always wonder about this,.....
Someone finds a long lost tape in the attic,.....
Someone has to digitalise the tape, someone has to press lp's of them?
Its a real undertaking for someone who just finds a tape.

Sometimes I think its all just a setup with a few professionals/oldtimes who have a huge amount of content that there holding back just waiting to capitalise of it or with the intend of never making it public.

I'd love to know the story of how things like this happen and who's behind it. I guess even some people here may know more than they can let on!

Let's be honest – the situation with Julia Nagle is enough to illustrate why anyone not directly involved with the band wouldn't bother trying to negotiate a "legal" solution to getting these rarities released.

And those who are directly involved in the band have long ago given up hope of trying to make any money from what's left to release in this internet age.

In either situation I would be tempted to just take a cash in hand payment from a bootlegger, and then say no more about it. Obviously I'm not suggesting that is in anyway what has happened here.

It's potentially new material by a band that we all love...

Personally I am grateful that somebody has gone to the trouble to digitalise the tape and press lp's of it.

I agree that it is  a real undertaking for someone who just finds a tape, but I am glad that they went to this effort.

As far a profit goes, there is expense involved with the above, and the ebay price for the double album is not in my opinion unreasonable, they could have been asking a lot more for it and no doubt there are some that would have paid more.

I am sure that in time it may find it's way online if it hasn't done so already, (not that I am encouraging this at all).

But perhaps in this day and age a physical release is less hard to ban or remove?

My only 'regret' is that it is shipping from Australia, and I wish I could have it sooner :-)

Wabnasm - I highly recommend Clinton Heylin's truly excellent book about the history of bootlegging. It takes you right back to the beginning and plots the rise of the bootleg LP and the various tricks, adventures and escapades the bootleggers from legendary labels like TMOQ and TAKRL got up to and then takes you on through to the protection gap CDs of the nineties - and probably beyond in the latest edition.

Like many bootlegs the book has been released under at least two titles with pretty much identical contents so it doesn't matter which one you pick up:

Bootleg: The Secret History of the Other Recording Industry

Bootleg! The Rise And Fall Of The Secret Recording Industry

Clinton also co-authored Form and Substance about Joy Division so he's written two of my favourite books.

Got my copy in the post today - I bought a blue one. It beats me how they persevered with "Incubation" - even playing it live twice. This minute and a half "Instrumental Jam" has a lot more going for it - it's more energetic, the chord sequence is more adventurous - and I hope that somewhere along the line a fuller version of this exists somewhere. Yep - give me this over "Incubation" any day.

The first "In A Lonely Place" (as opposed to the two "Misplaced" tracks) on here is just an intro snippet - the only vocal is Hooky going "WOAH".

A better "Incubation"? Sounds wonderful.

That answers the question about the IALP snippet sounds, then

This may sound completely crazy but I wonder if "Instrumental Jam" actually turned into "Glass" or "Digital". You guys know the time line a lot better than I do but it sounds a lot like an early version of "Glass" to me.

Not a better version of "Incubation" - it's a different track entirely - but I prefer it to "Incubation". My guess would be that it would be from the same time as the "Means To An End" rehearsals - poss late Nov early Dec 79 - too late for it to be a dry run for "Glass" or "Digital"

Do you not think it could actually BE Incubation? It's played in the same key (if tape is pitched down slightly), it uses the same two notes on the guitar parts. The bass is different though.

This could be how Incubation started life before being transformed into what we now know.

Possibly - if so - IMHO they shouldn't have tinkered with it :-)

Its always wonderful for new recordings to still be unearthed some 34+ years after JD ceased to exist .... but i gotta admit i was somewhat underwhelmed by the 'A means to an end' rehearsals [eek]

The instrumental sounded very reminiscent of Incubation to me too...it could easily be something they returned to, lifted out the odd riff and came up with Incubation. In much the same way, they took that first rehearsal version of Means to an End, extracted parts of it and came up with a song from a rather rambling eight minute jam - it's interesting that they did the same with In a Lonely Place, albeit with two meandering versions.

Also, wouldn't Means to an End actually have been called Incubation at that time?

The record is officially out in the public. The No Records Left blogspot has it up for download (no links, due to thread rules). Just Google it.

I got it and uploaded it to Youtube.

The only complaint I have is that a lot of the songs are edited. Lots of fade-ins and fade-outs...take for example "Pictures in My Mind (Take 1)". The beginning guitar sound is cut entirely, and the song just erupts. I can't speak for the previously unreleased rehearsals, but a lot of the previously leaked ones are edited pretty significantly in some places.

That minute and a half Instrumental Jam sounds great - something in it reminds me of Chosen Time - but I am sure you can find something familiar in every jam if you listen. I can hear drums/bass/guitar, maybe some of the cymbal playing is Ian or he is arranging or dancing [smile] Cool to hear it.
I always connected Incubation with this Velvets instrumental Guess I'm Falling in Love as
I think Ian/JD listened to some 68 VU boots and the two songs sound related to me - and maybe this New Jam a bit too, JD rockin out with guitars and shit, sweet!
