The sound of jd was based mostly on guitar tones of Bernard Gibson sg and Shergold Masquerader Custom with di marzio super distortion (a great pup.. overdriven and thick tone) through a beautiful and mega rare 1966 Vox UL730 / 2 x 12" bulldog speaker box. That amp has a solid state preamp and tube power tubes, it a very rare and particular one.. The beatles used it from the revolver period a whole lot before switching to fenders,,
A great and LOUD amp, Bernie one was stolen in nyc in the first no tour..
[cccccc]
By using a Altair PW-5 Power Attenuator he could drive the amp loud without the use of earplugz as overloaded and distorted sound could be achieved only with high volume because of his architecture..
MXR equalizer did cut the sound and can be noted on some songs
other effects used: Melos Echo/Delay Unit, Chorus

Bass was a rickembacker 2001 copy (hondo ?) through a 60's all tube marshall amp.. It was hooky pride but he had to sell it to pay bills..  Hooky trademark effect was Electro-Harmonix Clone theory
Hooky then used a Shergold marathon 6 strings bass and a yamaha bb1200s bass

hooky marshall amp is one of these..  probably lead bass 100w
https://solodallas.com/the-vintage-marshall-guide

bernie gibson sg is a 75 standard... as seen in this catalogue  (not a modified 60's one "vithout vibrola" this because of the trademark harmonica bridge that was typical on these 70's ones)

http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1975_solidbody_9.php

and Shergold masquerade (made in england, currently not in the making)

Eastwood makes a Shergold masquerade replica  "JD model"

as seen here

https://eastwoodcustoms.com/projects/shergold-masquerader/

In the book "The Definitive of Joy Division", Curtis is stated to have played Bernard Sumner's Shergold Masquerader before he purchased his Vox Phantom IV.

Bernard customized his own Shergols with di marzio super distortion pickup at bridge and di marzio paf model at neck (typical customization for the era)

These pickups were the only available custom pickups at the time and people were getting them for the fat overdriven tone

That one below seems to miss the white di marzio pickups so may be is another one, spare. It's a early New Order performance showing Gilbert

Vox phantom IV guitar has built in effects (fuzz, tremolo, repeat percussion) as seen here

JD synths were prinitive ones...

ARP omni 2

and Powertran Transcendent 2000

It sounds like Eastwood has given up on that Masquerader idea, not enough interest.

That was a later model, and they've still got it. You can see it in Kevin Cummins' book.

p.hook used a marshall for a while then switched to hiwatt 100w head coupled with vox 18inch box after seeing jj burnel of the stranglers using one

i.c used a yamaha 2x10 g100 amplifier (i have one by coincidence... really cool, extremely powerful and clean and has a weird equalizer)

albrecht used that vox ul 730 ...> altair ....> 2 x 12 bulldog vox box ....> melos echo/mxr 10 band eq/phaser or flanger

s morris used a Simmons SDS-V Drum Synthesizer on stage

The vid I posted is of a clone of the 730 amp I built last year. As near as you'll get without paying out a fortune for one of the originals.

It's a solid state preamp which, when pushed, overdrives in a really pleasant way. The built in distortion dirties it up when needed.

I'll be making more in the next few months.

great ! I know a couple players that may be interested in getting one..  if you are interested in selling.

I have a yamaha g100 2x10" just like I C one used in the european tour. I bought it because I lacked a combo and it was cheap and had 10" so not too heavy. It's known as a jazz amp - clean - but the built in equalizer delivers very familiar tones, have a feeling Bernard was responsible for choosing this amp as it was a little ahead of his time.

WIll you post a pic of the knobs of your clone ? Is there a pedal for distortion ?

tnx

These are the ones I use. Close but not quite to the originals. All amps come with a 3 way footswitch for distortion, trem and reverb.

Good post Porfido !

Barney’s power attenuator (‘hotplate’) really allowed his classic 60’s Vox valve amp sound to be cranked up to give that fantastic crunchy / jagged sound

Presuming that he got this late ‘79 .... as it can be heard on the recordings of the Jan ‘80 European tour dates that exist.

From memory, I didn’t think it was evident on the Oct/Nov Buzzcocks gigs - but I could be wrong?

Just made this pedal which is basically all of the effects from the Vox Phantom Special in a box.
