To those who were privvy/sneaky enough to get to see one, did the band 'perform' or just go through the motions?  I've seen some bands who don't care if they are in an empty building at 5pm or in front of an audience at 10pm, they still get into it and do pretty much a toned-down-let's-not-get-worn-out version of what's coming later, and then others who do it only because they have to.

They've always worked hard in soundchecks, to make sure the local sound is exactly how they want it. Some New Order soundchecks (and I've been to 30) have been really good performances, they don't piss about.

Kinda what I thought - the soundchecks are always done at the right pace, with the right amount of Oomph, but I've seen some in the past that were dire.

i was lucky enough to see the soundcheck at the factory tour gig at the russell club in 1979 - as a very young 18 i was pretty awestruck to be let in the club early anyway (by AHW it was a freezing nite) and the intensity of seeing jd in the darkened factory was one of the most life changing  experiences of my life - it was just like a gig they meant every word and i can see myself now sat at a little table alone as they powered through unknown numbers - so wish i taken my little camera but probably wouldnt have had the nerve to take any pix - funni but the oni thing i really remember about the gig itself was a bored punter throwing a glass of beer over john dowie !  saw them again in april 80 at the factory wen i did have my camera !!
