I'd like to know what's the name of Stephen Morris drum technique in songs like Interzone and Transmission. That very fast hi hat and snare beat. Is there a name for it?

In those songs he's playing sixteenth notes on the hi-hat (i.e. 16 notes per bar, or 4 per beat).. I'm not sure if there's another name for it in drummer lingo.

I call it Motor-disko! Also seen/heard on N.O - Age of Consent and Killing Joke - Psyche

So what is the technique or pattern on "Colony"? The best way I can describe it is, it sounds like Steve's playing the drums backwards. Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense lol.
ON EDIT: I noticed last night this same "backwards" pattern on "Wilderness." Like instead of starting with the drum with the highest sound then linearly progressing to the lowest sounding drum, these pattens start low and progress upward. Is there a proper name for such a pattern?
Help me out here, please-all I know about drums is one sits behind them and plays them with drumsticks. And it either sounds "Yeah!!!" or "turn that ##*! off"
Thanks:-)

I may not know what to call it lol but I do know that anyone who is not familiar with Stephen's techniques can quickly get up to speed by having a listen to the Town Hall gig at High Wycliffe. Steve was right on that night! Whee!:-D

On Colony it's like: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + bd-o-----o-o-----o-o-----o--------- sn---x-x-----x-x-----x-x-----x---x- (I have no idea if that will display right). I think you'd call this a syncopated rhythm, seeing as a lot of the snare hits are on off-beat notes. Wilderness has more of a shuffle variation on a standard rock beat where he's filling in the 16th notes on the snare, something like this: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + bd-o-o-----o-o----- sn-----x--x-x--x-x-My drum knowledge is quite limited really so I don't know what the real technical names are, maybe somebody with proper training can fill us in..

'Colony' is such an unusual drum pattern. I sometimes kind of "misinterpret" the beat when I listen to it (ie, it seems in my head that it goes "DUH-du-du-du-DUH-du-du...." istead of "du-du-DUH-du-du-du-DUH-du...") if that makes any sense! There's at least one live recording, circa Aug/Sep 79, where the rest of the band seem similarly confused! I smiled when I heard that one, I was like, yeah, I know how you feel! ...But yes, I concur, Stephen Morris is just an excellent drummer.
