Have always loved guitar.
Would love to hear others tell their fave guitar parts- even a brilliant tiny little run.
Love Wilderness too...sooooo good.
Hell, throw in your fave lyrics or parts of songs.
I am loving the discovery/re-discovery.
My life is the song Love Will Tear Us Apart.
Amazing words. Simple, true.

Yes, Love Will Tear Us Apart might be the best pop song ever written. The words are more than simple. Love Will Keep Us Together is one of the pop-clichés and didn't Platon and the greek philosophers defined the Eros/Love as the power that keeps human beings together? If you listen to Joy Division, as simple as the songs might appear, most songs don't have "Refrains". It's funny somehow: the techno- and house- and Drum and Bass scene later called their music "tracks". But in more than one way, Joy Division "songs" were more tracks than songs. A lot of the times, where mainstream pop songs have a refrain, there is just a variation of the verse and no vocals. As in "Disorder". New Dawn Fades, Shadowplay, I Remember Nothing, Atrocity Exhibition, Passover, The Eternal, Atmosphere(!) don't have Refrains. Love Will Tear Us Apart kind of is a classic pop-song. But the chords are the same through the entire song. And the bass plays the melody of the Refrain through the entire song with the exception of the bridge after the second Refrain. My favourite lyrics are Colony, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Atmosphere and New Dawn Fades. I did listen to New Dawn Fades for the first time in 1981 when I was 17. I did listen to Unknown Pleasures and New Dawn Fades kind of put me in. I remember listening to NDF 3 or 4 times, lying on my bed and I simply couldn't move. This was just so beautifull and hauting and real. It felt like a big stone sitting on my stomach preventing me from moving or doing anything. Waiting for me this time, hoping for something else... For me, Curtis compared to other great songwriters like Dylan or Tom Waits or Townes Van Zandt is like Kafka compared to Beckett or James Joyce or Marcel Proust. He always kind of remains "small", petite. And like Kafka is - for me - the greatest exception in the history of literature, Curtis might be the or one of the greatest exception in the history of pop music. Like Kafka he doesn't fit, he still doesn't belong there, but in a good way. Hard to explain, 'cause english isn't my native language...

It would be Colony since it was the first Joy Division song I learned how to play. I remember playing all day long, until my mother got sick and tired of the song, and pulled the guitar plug

The very quiet 4+4+5 note guitar repetition behind all the synth noise on Decades is so beautiful I am determined to write a song using it, but most people have never heard it until they listen for it...

Now we talk... Do you talk 02:56?
Hannett is incredible here: you hear the small guitar motive. Than it seems to vanish and the bass and the drums are left alone, than the vocals set in again, but it just goes on and on in the background. If the vocals would start immediately it would be different, but the trick is to let the drums and the bass alone for 4 beats and than the vocals start. It is like being hypnotized.

Best bit on Decades is the melodica track.
Favourite guitar riff? Probably A Means to an End, though that opening Shadowplay salvo takes some beating.

We have a thread about guitar and Joy Division and no one has mentioned New Dawn Fades. I have to correct the world. The arpeggios Bernard is playing during the verses, esp. the first verses have to be mentioned. And whatever Hannett did with what Bernard was playing. I have to admit this was the song that got me into becoming a bass player, but... The entire guitar on this song is just brilliant. I never could really figure out what Bernard is playing during the verses. I came pretty close, but there is still something I can't figure out. And listening to later versions with Bernard on guitar (there is one where Bernard plays guitar to the Moby cover of NDF) it seems that even Bernard can't recreate what he has playing on the original version. A very simple song with only ONE part (I love this), no bridge, no refrain. But there is so much going on there. This song did not only make me wanting to become a bass player. It was the song that made me become a Joy Division addict. Being 17 I listened to it 5 or 6 times in a row lying in my bed and it moved me so much, I felt like being buried and couldn't move anymore.
