Has it ever been mentioned in interviews whether Joy Division always intended to put the droning one-note of a keyboard from the intro and throughout the song on the version for the single? Alternatively, did one of them just decide it needed it on the day of recording?

It's obviously a Martin Hannett thing. I wouldn't rule out the keyboard intro was done in order to increase chances for radio airplay, since bands with synths were generally seen as "music for the future/1980s". Also, no keyboard intro would mean that DJs would talk over more of the bass intro (if they wouldn't do so until the end of the guitar intro).

Yes, big Hannett influence on this track. My only problem with it is the removal of Steve's brilliant drum fills toward the end of the song. I can't imagine that will have gone down well. Hopefully it will be referenced in his book!

Always thought that drone added an ethereal element to what is essentially a driving rock song, takes it to another level for the single release.

I like it so far, esp. the drone and the bass. The guitar is partially (!) too much rock cliché, where Joy Division isn't (00:28 - 00:30 for example; 2:00ff.). But I like the sound.
Towards the end I like the guitar.
Your voice is a bit shy, as if you don't really dare to sing or you're afraid of your neighbours. As in so many soundcloud / amateur recordings. (Not that I am different!).
The mix is good. Go on!

Music sounds ok for me.

Thanks ever so for the feedback. Just glad I wasn't deemed to have completely ruined such an iconic track. I for one certainly have a new found appreciation of just how great IC was.

This has been around for a few years, but I'd not
seen it before. It's really rather wonderful.
