Can it really be 40 years since I bought this masterpiece!

Here are my thoughts on this stunning album 4 decades down the line

"Unknown Pleasures never charted and was, shockingly, the only Joy Division album released when Curtis was alive"

What will be next year, closer turning 40?hope they'll do a "black" version of the artwork and the following year "still" blue\white or black/white cover?would be nice, like what they did with UP for sure!

Really enjoyed reading your review of UP, and your memories of seeing Joy Division, banjo. It's refreshing to read articles that are well written but without the arty-fartiness of most professional music critics. I think I'll bookmark getintothis.

Actually, UP did make the official albums chart for one week in 1980, crashing in at no.71, then disappearing again until last week when it re-entered at no.5 - possibly setting a record for the longest period between leaving & re-entering the chart! (Although how they set the rules on what counts as a "re-entry" is beyond me! It's a different sleeve, on a different label! If you look at the chart history for say "The Stone Roses", it has four or five separate chart listings on the same label / catalogue number! How does that work)?

Thanks a lot.

Glad it finally managed to crack the top ten. I wonder if this actually is a record, Shocking to hear that it only made number 71 on release! Post punk was still very underground in 1979

A quick look at the UK charts website (https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/albums-chart/) tells us that UP charted at No.71 in the UK, on week ended 30 Aug 1980.
I've often wished that the UK charts people would release the entire Top 200 archives (France publishes their Top 200 singles and albums each week, why can't we?) as it would be nice to see the full data.
Mind you, it's worth remembering that back in 1980, the UK charts were compiled from data from only several hundred record shops in the country, excluding a lot of smaller independent stores where "underground" records were more likely to be shipped out to by the smaller distribution companies, and so actual sales data was quite unreliable. It's quite possible that Joy Div's (and early New Order's) records sold more copies than were reflected in the charts those days. We'll probably never know.
